•Court and Colt and Ryland growing up in shitty motel rooms while their father left them to go hunt monsters
•their father doesn't have a reason for doing it. He's just mad and angry and wants to hurt things
•Colt taking to holding the weapons their father uses surprisingly well. Court hates it. He's terrified of it
•Ryland learning how to hold and shoot a gun from their father, then crying the first time he killed something and Court promising him after that he would never have to do something like that again, that Court would always do it for him
•Court killing their father with that very same gun Ryland used, then later telling the twins that something had happened to their father, that one of the creatures he hunts got to him and changed him and that's why he nearly killed Ryland, that's why Court had to kill him, and it's not true, not at all, their father was always like this, but it was an easier truth for the 10 year old twins to swallow
•Ryland being furious when he finds out, devastated that Court lied to him, and he leaves as soon as he turns 18 and never looks back (he never wanted to be a hunter anyway. He hated it. He hated all of this. He wanted his books and his science and the real world)
•Colt leaves too, because he meets Jody, because he wants a shot at a normal life (and Court would never deny him this, bc he wants Colt to have a shot at a real life too), but he doesn't go no contact with Court like Ryland did
•Court could leave too. He could quit this life. He should. He hates it. But he sticks with it because it's all he's ever known. It's how he knows how to keep Colt and Ryland safe
•Court being on a hunt with Fitzroy, another hunter, when this man he's worked with for years dies. He has a niece. Claire. She has nowhere else to go. So Court, even though he's terrified of giving her the same childhood of shitty motel rooms that Colt and Ryland had, tells her to come with him
•Court eventually reaching back out to Ryland years later because something has happened to Colt. He can't get in contact with him and it's been weeks. And Court is scared and worried and wants to know if Ryland has heard from him
•Ryland hasn't. He barely talks to Colt as it is. But he agrees to go with Court anyway, to drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles with him to where Colt is supposed to be, because surely Court must be wrong. Surely Colt must be perfectly safe and sound and happy
•except he's not. Because Jody hasn't seen or heard from him either
