I’ve been thinking about getting a Pokemon game in Japanese for some language stuff and while looking through clips online of gen 2 the player went into the Pokemon center to heal, and after handing over their Pokemon, nurse joy responded with an “itadakimasu” which left me with the hilarious imagery of her taking a bite out of totodile before I remembered my flashcards
Therein lies the fun fact: itadakimasu comes from the root verb “itadaku” which is an overly formal and somewhat old fashioned word meaning ‘to receive’ which makes sense in the polite context of the pokemon center; so if your ever watching anime and wondering about the literal translation of itadakimasu, its something like “im receiving”, aided in politeness by the -masu. So yea, receiving food
