When the show really portrays Shane and Ilya as kids who are just that good at hockey, well I just had to put em in this world as well. It just makes sense.
Shane and Ilya are alumni of Camp Half Blood, leaving after just turning 16. They went from High School Hockey Players during the year and demigods in the summer to full-time demigod hockey players. They left camp but they never really thought their own rivalry would be revived after meeting outside of camp and now in the ice.
They both came in to Camp when they were just 10 years old and were even roommates in the Hermes cabin and had to deal with Ilya bugging him for almost half the summer, and Shane falling for all his antics. When Shane won his first Capture The Flag game for the Hermes Cabin, he earned the glory of his godly parent. The flag that was supposed to bear the caduceus of Hermes, was instead a gray flag bearing the owl of Athena, winning the game for the Athena Cabin.
Being in a cabin full of the most serious kids who took every game and battle seriously, Shane fell victim to a lot of Ilya's jokes, pranks, and in general rage-baiting, which made everyone wonder why it took so long for Hermes to claim him. Not to mention that whenever those two battled in a game or in training, it was definitely lightning. It was fierce and it was always deadly, leading many to believe Ilya could be a son of Ares, their rivalry only made sense that way. In the next Capture the Flag game, Athena cabin and Hermes cabin would be on opposing sides.
Athena cabin was obviously winning but Ilya was taking the extra effort to go after Shane and baiting him to fighting him. Luckily for him, Shane was falling for it too easily. After a few scratches, bruises, and punches to the face, Ilya was on the ground, Shane's knee on his chest and foot pressing on his wrist, unable to grab his sword. Breaths rushed in and out, their chests beating too fast, and Shane was about to punch Ilya's smile off his face.
The horn blew indicating the win for the Athena cabin, and Ilya surrendered. Shane released him, reluctantly. He stood up laughing which only made Shane roll his eyes in frustration. Then as the campers gathered around them, the nightly gray and blue tint of the forest was overwhelmed with a warm red glow that originated from a symbol above Ilya's head. But, instead of the boar or caduceus that everyone assumed, the symbol of a pink dove floated over him. He was a son of Aphrodite.
Ilya laughed at it, in confusion mostly, but Shane's eyebrows crossed in frustration. Why was he getting so riled up by the son of a love goddess.
