Like, in the period directly after Katsuya's death, Kyoko couldn't even remember eating at all. So Tohru probably first learnt to prepare food then at such a tender age.

And then, it became something that only she could provide for her mother. So she practiced at it, and worked hard at it, to the point when ever when she was sick; she still got up and made her Mum food.

Because it was something that meant Kyoko would STAY. Her Mum wasn't going to leave her again because she spoke like her dad, and she always made sure Kyoko had delicious food so she wouldn't go elsewhere.
