Critter of the Week: Week 52: Flying Gulls
This is the last critter of the year! I can't believe how quickly this project has gone by. I've got a 2017 project in the works and am still trying to nail down all of the details. At this time, I'm planning a monthly project instead of a weekly to allow myself time to create more detailed and thoughtful pieces while also leaving time for other endeavors. This weekly project has been great for me in terms of growth and exploration, but it became a primary focus at times and I need to diversify!
December 25 is my son's birthday. It was warmish here in Virginia Beach, so we went out to the Ocean Front to toss a frisbee and soak in some winter sun. As my daughter and I stood along the water's edge, we watched the multitude of seagulls and other water fowl soaring above and around the water. That scene seemed an appropriate end to this weekly critter project. You can see all of this year's critters at my website.

This month's member spotlight is a talented illustrator and storyteller who has managed to blend her two passions into a freelance career. Cherilyn Colbert is a Hampton Roads transplant with over a decade of working as a graphic designer and freelance illustrator. I started this painting when we were still living in Shreveport. It was inspired by the big American Sycamore in the middle of AC Steere park. I haven't pulled out my paints since we've moved back to Virginia Beach, but I pulled this piece out to get a sense of whether or not it's done. Critter of the Week: Week 45. Dove.
This week feels like a major step back for the progress we’ve made as a society. I don’t fault folks for wanting change in their government. I actually very much understand that. But, I do have a problem with racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, homophobic, trans-phobic rhetoric and the attitude of overall meanness and derision to people that are different from you—and that’s the change it feels like this country has elected. Hoping for the best.

Critter of the Week: Week 37. Fox. . This week, instead of my usual process of sketch to illustrator to photoshop, I skipped the Illustrator step and completed this critter as a digital painting. I wanted to mimic the process of building the layers like I would a painting. I used high-quality brushes by @kyle.t.webster and @retrosupply. They are the absolute best out there. . Critter of the Week: Week 32. A Colonial Bear
Colonial Williamsburg is offering free admission to Hampton Roads area folks this week. So, the kids and I went up for a few rainy hours on Monday. I’ve been to Williamsburg a number of times, but I’ve never gone into any of the ticketed buildings. We had a fun time eating lunch at the Cheese Shop, stumbling into a great little bookstore, seeing George Wythe’s house where George Washington and Marquis de Lafayette planned the Battle of Yorktown (my daughter was super stoked about that). As we finished up dinner at a tavern, I peeked out of an upstairs window and saw a couple walking a dog that, from a distance, looked very much like a bear.
