I started watching operas??!
Okay, so maybe it's not all actual Italian operas, and as of right now I've only watched a Peking opera known as Farewell my Concubine. And Omg it was so good. It's about the Emperor (Xiang Yu) of the state of Chu and it's. About going to war with the leader of the Han dynasty. Like at the beginning Xiang Yu is fooled by a "traitor" to the Han army and takes him in as a advisor. And in doing so the Xiang Yu brings all of his people (army, advisors, wife) to the camp for protection and other things that a war hero definitely needs. But anyway, his wife (Lady Yu) tries to tell him it's not a smart idea to go off and fight this battle bc it's so obviously a trap, but yk hubris and the I've never lost mind set kicks in. So he goes, they fight in a war, he loses a battle and everyone tells him he wont lose the war. Cut to Lady Yu is trying to make Lord Yu feel better and they learn that all 8,000 of his troops were killed in a battle and it's time to face the enemy for real. Lady Yu speaks about how she is a burden and decides that she'll kill herself to keep her from distracting him in such a heartfelt manor. Honestly, not even the saddest part. THEN, Xiang Yu goes into battle and realizes he has nothing to really live for bc hs wife is dead, his troops are dead, and his countrymen and subjects have accepted their fate. So he kills himself.
Like I think in the beginning i was in it for hits and shiggles, and I had a really hard time understanding that Peking opera and Italian opera are two different things. Cuz when you think of opera you probs think about how it's high notes and singing the entire time. But with Peking it's different, now tell me if I'm wrong but I feel as though within this genre, the singing is not drawn out songs, but short little asides speaking about the characters feelings and giving that little bit of exposition that is needed.
Really I was tearing up in the end and this was a 10/10 experience. The characters make-up and clothes were just beautiful, so I might draw them if I feel so inclined. I also might make more opera post bc why not.
