Oh, no. No no no no no. He wasn’t ready to go back yet. Call him a coward, or a shirker of his duty, but he wasn’t ready to dedicate his life to protecting the world from the moonstone. He wanted to have fun and adventure and… he still hadn’t told Rapunzel everything yet. He wasn’t sure how.

“Oh, no, Varian, it would be irresponsible of me to just let you go all that distance by yourself again. No, you’ll just have to stay here where I can keep an eye on you. For all of our sakes.” Eugene shook his head. “We’re going to need a cover story for Rapunzel and Cass. Who I am isn’t exactly… known.”

▬▬▬ 🧪      Varian kept the smug  look  on  his  face.  The  prince  could  try  &&  claim  that  he  wanted  to  be  responsible,  but  he  knew  better.  Still,  if  Varian  got  to  stay,  it  was  a  win  for  him  &&  he’d  take  it.  

                                  ❛  Wait, really? You’ve been here all this time with the Princess of Corona && she doesn’t even know you’re a prince?  ❜

❛ Soooo, kind of a crazy story about why I’m here – ❜

Varian grinned sheepishly at Eugene, hands tightening around the bag he was carrying.

❛ I sorta, kinda, ran away to come find you. But I did it! I found you so… ❜ He trailed off, looking at him hopefully.

❛ Can I stay? Pleeeease? Think of the life experience I can get from this! I came all this way, don’t make me go back! ❜ ( dark prince verse?? ) | @chemisonne​

“I can’t believe you’d do something so reckless and impulsive!”

The stern expression faded almost immediately, a goofy grin on Eugene’s face.

“I’m so proud of you. But also-” The image of an angry Adira flashed across his mind. Oh, no no no, he did not want her finding him. With Varian.

“What in the name of everything sane and decent were you thinking? That was dangerous! And- And- You’re still just a kid, Varian. Smartest person in the Kingdom or not.”

▬▬▬ 🧪      Varian knew that Eugene   would  be  proud  of  him.  He  learned  troublemaking  from  the  best,  after  all!  But  that  was  short  lived.  When  the  prince  expressed  that  it  was  dangerous,  the  teen  rolled  his  eyes.  Everything  was  fine,  probably.  As  long  as  his  mother  didn’t  find  out.  

                                  ❛  Welllll, alright. You want me to go home? I can do that!  ❜  He  paused,  waiting  for  Eugene’s  reaction  before  continuing.  ❛  When I get back, I’ll just let everyone know I ran into you here in Corona! I’m sure everyone’ll be so pleased to hear about that! I should get going then!  ❜

“Completely unnecessary risk. Think about the danger it’ll put Varian in. He’s still just a child.”

                                  ❛  Yep, that’s me. The child. Definitely a big risk to take me there. We should just skip it.  ❜

“Can I vote that we don’t go to the Dark Kingdom?”

                                  ❛  Yeah, I’m with Eugene on this one. Let’s not.  ❜

        Oh boy oh boy do I have  a lotof  feelings  about  this!  So  I  actually  thought  about  this  a  long  time  ago,  but  now  that  the  show  is  finished,  I’ve  given  it  more  thought  &&  I’ve  adjusted  my  process  appropriately  for  my  take  on  Varian.  I’ve  always  subscribed  to  Varian’s  endgame  being  becoming  Corona’s  royal  alchemist.  It’s  a  perfect  job  for  him  &&  I  just  know  that  he’d  love  that,  because  it  makes  him  feel  useful  to  the  kingdom.  Varian  loves  being  able  to  help  everyone,  especially  after  everything  he  did  in  the  past.  

        Originally  —  before  season  three  aired  that  is,  I  had  it  that  he  would  always  accept  the  position ( && that still stands ).  Where  I’ve  changed  it  though  is  his  reaction.  Originally,  Varian  felt  as  if  he  didn’t  deservethe  position.  Mind  you,  I  made  this  up  before  his  season  three  redemption,  so  the  whole  storyline  with  Varian  slowly  rebuilding  his  trust  with  Rapunzel  wasn’t  exactly  a  thing.  So  the  relationship  wasn’t  entirely  mended  in  Varian’s  eyes  &&  he  was  hesitant  to  take  the  job  at  first.  He  just  didn’t  want  to  disappoint  Rapunzel  again.

        But  in  light  of  this  past  season &&Varian  having  the  time  to  fix  his  relationship  with  Rapunzel  &&  make  up  for  his  wrongdoings,  I  think  that  his  decision  to  accept  the  title  of  Royal  Engineer  /  Science  Nerd  /  Alchemist  was  a  lot  easier  to  make.  In  his  eyes,  he  had  more  than  redeemed  himself  &&  was  happy  that  Rapunzel  now  trusted  him  enough  to  offer  him  the  job.  He  knows  that  he  can  make  her  proud.  He  makes  sure  every  day  that  she  never  regrets  the  decision  to  give  him  the  position.  

        It’s  definitely  still  weird  to  Varian  that  he  has  such  an  esteemed  title.  He  takes  a  little  time  getting  used  to  it,  but  he  wears  it  proudly.  To  him,  this  title  represents  how  far  he’s  come  in  his  journey.  He  went  from  a  kid  with  dreams  too  big  for  his  small  village,  a  friend  &&  scientist  to  the  princess,  an  enemy  to  the  crown,  to  rekindling  his  friendships  &&  serving  the  crown  in  the  best  way  possible.  It  takes  a  lot  of  getting  used  to  for  him  even  now  that  people  are  happy  to  see  him  in  town.  No  one  cowers  away  in  fear,  or  stares  at  him  suspiciously  anymore.  

        Once  he  is  fully  adjusted  to  his  new  job,  Varian  is  alwaysworking.  He’s  always  had  big  plans,  but  now  he  focuses  on  what  can  help  the  kingdom  as  a  whole.  He  wants  to  make  sure  that  everybody  in  Corona  is  living  the  best  way  they  can.  His  technological  advances  have  improved  Corona’s  quality  of  living  exponentially.  Work  doesn’t  feel  like  work  to  him.  It’s  what  he  loves  to  do  &&  he  wouldn’t  have  it  any  other  way.  For  Varian,  this  truly  is  his  happily  ever  after.
