Manga That I Would Recommend In 2019!
My previous posts included a lot of self-reflection and thought and emotion included in the posts, and I am okay with that. But here is where it gets good and definitely more technical, I am going to included mangas that I would recommend to anyone. I will be including multiple genres and my reasoning behind each manga. First I will start with an explanation of the different kinds of manga and how they are categorized. There are terms for the target audience of the manga and there are the terms for the genre of the manga. For demographics, it consists of shounen, shoujo, josei, and seinen. Shounen is mangas developed and aimed towards boys from 8-18 while Shoujo is aimed towards girls from 8-18. Josei is aimed towards women aged 18+ and Seinen is aimed towards men aged 18+. Next, come the genres and all mangas fall under these categories. There are specific genres that cater to specific demographics. For example, shounen is more action, adventure and comedy oriented. While shoujo is more romance and drama oriented. Of course, there are other categories such as horror, historical, fantasy, etc. Anything a normal fictional book genre has, manga has too. Now that I have gotten a little of the basics out of the way, I will now list and describe my top mangas. Everyone has different taste so some may not like these as much as others, so please be respectful of others!
I have been reading manga since I was 12, which means I have read a lot of manga and makes this task incredibly challenging. I will compile the list into two, completed and ongoing:
Ouran High Host Club is about a normal girl (who does not wear the schools expensive uniform) who enrolls into an elite academy on a scholarship and runs into the schoolâs âmost popularâ and rich group of guys. This manga is based on her interactions with this group and its great because it shows a good character development of the surrounding characters as well as the main character in the plot. It is also comedic because the boys in this story are very different in characteristics. The plot is not only adorable but it also depicts relationships between the lower and upper class and how that relationship changes.
Hitman Reborn took a few tries to get into, but once you get past the first few volumes it gets really good. The plot is about a normal teenage boy hiring a tutor that looks like a baby but turns out to be a part of the Italian mafia. The character grows from a shy coward to a strong and kind character. And his journey with his friends as he becomes the next mafia head is hilarious!
Tokyo Crazy Paradise is made from the same author as Skip Beat! This manga is about a girl who dresses like a guy and acts like a guy because the setting is set in the future and it is significantly dangerous for girls to be out on the streets without a form of protection. The character is already strong, but her independence and strength drew me to like this manga a lot! The plot is also amazing and contains a lot of action. The interactions between her and the other protagonist also kept me interested because it is so cute about how they made each other grow. This is the one few mangas I have reread!
This is a classic historical setting type of manga with samurais. It is about a man who used to be a very renowned and fearsome assassin who disappears from eyes and take on another identity to make up for his sins. The plot is amazing, constant action and character development. The main protagonist carries heavy baggage with him from the past and it was amazing to read how he got over it and grew from it with his interactions and relationships throughout the manga. He is also incredibly strong and it is fun to read when the character doesnât flaunt his strength but instead help others with it.
This is a romance manga about a short guy and a tall girl in high school. I loved this manga because it showed the difficulties and challenges of being different in high school and how they grew from the obstacles. This manga has a lot of comedic relief but it also has its emotional moments which shows their growth together from starting as friends to becoming lovers. At first, it was different to get used to but as I read it because the characters were different from what I was used to, but it really grew on me reading alongside the characters.
This manga is in another high school setting however it addresses real-life situations. The protagonist was bullied in middle school, and the manga shows how she overcame her fears when entering high school by taking a risk and following her dream of having a normal high school life and changing schools and attending a public high school instead of going to the private high school associated with the middle school she went too. It is such a pure manga with amazing character development and adorable romance that I am here for! The support she gets from her friends she made in high school are so heartwarming.
My Hero Academia is also another amazing manga. It is in a setting where everyone has a special power that is individual and unique to them. Whether it be a power used in everyday life or life-saving powers. The main character, however, is born with nothing, which makes him an anomaly. He gets ridiculed and bullied ever since he was young but he had so much hope and positivity that even though the world wasnât with him, he didnât lose sight of himself. And the manga is a whole journey that I would recommend because the characters are really likable and there is so much growth.
Dr. Stone is an amazing manga that revolves around science. The setting is that the whole world was petrified by a mysterious light, and after hundreds of years, the people start de-petrifying and it starts with a science genius. And the manga is about him bringing science back to the world that is still petrified. I love the adventure and the processes that the main character goes through to bring back people from being petrified.
This is a great manga from the same author of Tokyo Crazy Paradise. And it is about a girl whose character becomes incredibly stronger albeit strange after being used by the guy she trusted had a huge crush on. This entire manga is a progressive improvement of her and how she discovers what she enjoys and excels at, which is acting. It has a ton of comedy in it and a hint of romance again after the initial betrayal. She gained a lot after her initial loss and past baggage, and it's entertaining to read alongside her growth.
I Reincarnated into an Otome Game as a Villainess With Only Destruction Flags
This is another manga that I would recommend because it follows the development of the main character after realizing that they have been reincarnated as someone who is âevilâ. This manga is about a protagonist who dies and is reincarnated as a character in a game they played but as the main evil villain. I like reading how they realize that they are not evil and try to do the opposite and opposed the original villainous personality. It has comedy and an interesting plot and I would recommend it if you are looking for something a little different or if youâre tired of reading mangas where the main character is reincarnated as the main heroine (I personally love them both because they both offer different perspectives).
