TADC spoilers below the cut. Essay about a ridiculous Jax take I saw.
Following the release of the finale of TADC, I’ve seen some pretty heinous takes about Jax (people calling her a murderer, a sexually abuser (where tf did that one come from??), etc), but there was one that perplexed me so much I have to write about: TADC is a "transpessimist" narrative because human Jax has not started transitioning when we see her. This take is wrong on so many levels and it really stuck with me so this short essay exists now. I will not be naming the user who posted it because I don’t want to point a finger at them and also because I saw the take while scrolling through the TADC tag and I didn’t make a note of who the user was.
First, we cannot be certain that Jax HASN’T started transitioning. I assume the person who made the initial argument is basing their statement on the following: Jax is still going by her birth name (and I’m assuming is using he/him pronouns since that’s what Pommni, who wasn’t treated to an “Isn’t She Lovely” montage, uses) and isn't presenting in a typically “feminine” way. Her appearance shouldn’t even be a point of discussion, plenty of out trans women have shaggy hair and wear dysphoria hoodies. As for her name, plenty of people go on hormones for a period of time before socially transitioning. The process by which a person transitions varies a lot between people, there’s no rule that you have to pick a new name first.
All of that said, even if Jax is still closeted, the take remains dogshit. It’s very clear to me that the poster is speaking from a place of privilege. Transitioning in America can be scary, difficult, and even dangerous (from a social perspective) on many levels. All of that is exacerbated by Jax being an unhoused (I think Pomni might’ve mentioned that she found housing, but regardless, she is still financially vulnerable) woman of color. Jax has also been shown to be very traumatized and deeply self-loathing. For a person with her background, I would honestly be surprised if her coming to terms with her gender was anything but a gradual process. I don’t think portraying what is a difficult reality for many transgender women makes this narrative pessimistic. On the contrary, I feel like Jax's irl story moved in a positive direction. We learn that she’s made friends with whom she hangs out at Zooble’s bar. That means she’s finding queer community, which I definitely read as her being close to making a breakthrough.
Anyway, I wrote this for fun, not for school, so I don’t have much of a conclusion. Bunny girls are cool. Love your trans sisters, even when they make mistakes.
Okay I watched the finale yesterday and I've seen a lot of discourse around Jax being trans. Some people have said that it was literally confirmed in the finale that he's trans. Some people have said that those people are insane and he's cis. In this I am going to use He/Him pronouns just because that is what he publicly uses in the show. So, let's break it down, is Jax trans?
His bedroom: Jax has a very "girly" bedroom, which we know is created by Caine from the mind files, based on what he thinks the person would like. However we know from Zooble that Caine can sometimes mistake negative attention for positive attention. Regardless, I think Jax's room looking the way it does shows that femininity was something constantly on his mind. The fact that he hides his room from everyone is worth noting, however this could equally be because of this built up toxic masculinity rather than him being trans.
The maid dress: I think regardless of whether Jax is trans, this is foreshadowing his issues with femininity and masculinity. I think the fact that he's wearing it when Pomni is in his psyche shows that he feels like his feminine side is a big part of him. The question is HOW big.
Ribbit's bow: similar to when he gets put in the maid dress, he seems very embarrassed. The main difference is when it's in front of everyone, he gets angry, whereas when its just with someone he's comfortable with, he's a lot more calm. He's embarrassed which shows that it definitely hits a nerve in him, but comfortable enough not to lash out.
Defensiveness over his masculinity: He gets very defensive about being perceived as masculine, and its clear that he hides away any part of himself that could be perceived as feminine or weak. Brilliant example is him playing the piano. I think that there would be countless examples of little things he was hiding from everyone in order to preserve his masculinity. This kind of defensiveness clearly shows issues around masculinity and femininity, however not necessarily in a trans way (but also could be in a trans way)
I think that considering all these things, it is clear that Jax struggles a lot with his femininity. Regardless of whether he's trans, I think it's abundantly clear that he has a strong, but completely repressed feminine side. However, I think there are a few more things that point to Jax being trans rather than just insecure.
The isn't she lovely scene: Some people took "She" to be referring to Pomni, and that this was a funnybunny scene. However I think that it's clear that Jax is the subject of this scene. His face is showed more than Pomni's, and to me it really felt like the "She" was referring to Jax.
Leeroy hanging out at Riley's bar: I really think that wouldn't happen if leeroy/jax wasn't queer in some kind of way. Obviously this could be that Jax is a gay or bi, but I think that the show doesn't really allude to that at all. In fact, it alludes far more strongly to Jax liking women, with Pomni and Ribbit. Even though neither of those are confirmed romantic relationships, it's still suggested that romantic feelings may be involved. Meanwhile there are clear signs that Jax may be struggling with his gender. Of course he could still be attending this bar as an ally, but I think the show implies that he finds a little more community at this place. It's not just other outcasts he relates a bit more too, it's his people.
Leeroy style: this one is a bit more subjective but to me his style feels very "closeted trans girl coded". First of all his hair. His hair is kind of long which I think makes sense for wanting to at least have the option to appear more like a girl. Second of all it covers his face a lot. Similarly, his hoodie covers his body a lot. Sure maybe these things could just be personal style, but I think when you consider all these other indications towards Jax being trans, this reads more like him trying to cover up due to dysphoria. To me this seems like his attempt to cover his masculine features, and disappear a little.
The Thing He Told His Mum: To me this is the biggest indicator that he's trans and not just a man who likes to embrace his feminine side. When we see Jax talking to Ribbit, we learn that he told something important to his mum. So what was it? I don't think it makes sense to sit down with your mum to tell her "mum, I'm a feminine man", especially since it seems she already knows that about him. What would make sense is if he told her he was a trans women. ESPECIALLY with her response being laughing, I think that's a common response trans people get from transphobic parents. This really felt like a coming out scene to me, and as previously discussed, it makes a lot more sense for Jax to be trans than gay. Obviously this could've just been a completely unrelated important thing, such as him wanting to move out or maybe something about school/college/career. But I think when you consider everything else, the trans thing makes the most sense.
Bonus clue: let's not forget when goose said that Jax is her self insert ;)
so yeah I guess that is all the evidence and yall are free to make your own conclusions... but I think it's safe to say that it is heavily implied that Jax is trans. I think that it's kind of tastefully left to feel ambiguous cause he hasn't fully figured it out himself / to avoid backlash in the current climate of transphobia. But yeah to me this reads as trans Jax.
