the sugden prodigal son paradox. jack hates the farm and his dad because he views his dads farming practices as unethical and the farm as limiting his aspirations. eventually his dreams fail and he ends up back in the village, working on the farm, becoming his dad. he has a son. his only biological son. and jack ended up being so much like his dad and he assumes robert should be like him but also he resents robert because hes like sarah. hes free and feisty and has his own aspirations for freedom. but also hes just like a much younger version of jack like this. and rob pushes back against jacks opinions and choices, just like jack pushed back against jacoband jack resents this too. and that resentment turns robert into someone sick and twisted who does horrible things to the people he loves. but at the end of the day… after all robs aspirations failed hes back in the village working on the farm. just like jack said he would. just like annie knew jack would. their neverending cycle …
