as a nonbinary person, i think part of the reason why we gravitate towards names like ‘Leaf’ and ‘Moss’ is that “gender-neutral” names don’t really seem to cut it. Something like Alex can feel like a guy’s name OR a girl’s name. Maybe that’s the reason why we like our names unique. Most don’t want feminine OR masculine names, so one that has the potential to be one or the other seems inaccurate. So we end up with things that didn’t really used to be names.
