May Holiday Activities 2014
Once again we provided a varied menu of activities for you to access during the short but sweet May Holiday. The activities that were offered and planned were what you chose when we did a student survey recently.
Tuesday 27th May was Craft Day with Mrs Wrigglesworth
It was a great success for the minds of young Vivienne Westwood’s .The students had fashion trends in their heads and hands as the colours started to dazzle.
Tables prepared and paint brushes in hand it was time to attack the t-shirts!
Busy fingers were being tied together as they mastered the art of Tie-Dye with elastic bands before the dye was applied. Patterns and colours transformed the plain white t-shirts into magnificent works of art that even Versace would have been proud of. Seeing the end results and wonderful T-Shirts put smiles on all the faces on all our future fashion designers.
After some well-deserved lunch we set about designing and making our very own jewellery items out of the creative art of Shrink Plastic. The students started by planning their own designs, collecting images and transferring these onto the special plastic sheets, these were then trimmed and coloured in. Let the magic begin!
Heat guns were then applied to shrink the plastic to a third of its size with some fantastic results. Here Frankie Noon shows off her magnificent earrings.
Tuesday 27th May was the Chaucer Pool Tournament with Mrs Wild.
Pool cues ready and tension in the air as the young players waited to see who they would play against in the first rounds, fear and pure trauma hit the faces of some of the Y7 students as they realised they would have to play the Y11’s too, bravely they swallowed the huge lump in their throats, thrust their chests out and potted ball after ball and really held their own against some of their older and more experienced opponents, however Jordan Flanagan’s determination aim and power could not be beaten and he walked away with the 2014 Pool Tournament Chaucer Trophy.
Never mind lads, maybe next year?
Wednesday 28th May was a cooking day with Mrs Wrigglesworth and Mrs Wild.
Homemade healthy cheeseburger, wedges and coleslaw was on the menu. Eager to start the students arrived early and excited to use and develop their cooking skills. Pure concentration on their faces as they chopped, sliced and blended some mouth-watering ingredients. All of the students were in anticipation of eating their delicious culinary creations for lunch. Obviously most students have eaten cheeseburgers, wedges and coleslaw before, but not homemade. They commented on how much more delicious it tasted and even tried foods they previously disliked.Â
 Indoor Sports Day was held on Thursday 29th May with Mr Watts and Mrs Wild
Mr Watts and Mrs Wild challenged 14 students take part in a mini sports tournament and learn a new skill. The students were as eager as ever, with all of them turning up to the meeting point at the library half an hour early, (Why doesn’t this happen in term time?) After a gruelling, physical warm up session (a few games on the computer) we headed to the sports hall. Let the games begin. The first round was badminton. A great effort from everyone, even if it was raining shucklecocks at times! Then onto table tennis, in pairs the students perfected their speed and technique to deliver the perfect serve to obliterate their opponent and collect the points. Next was archery, after a short lesson and health and safety briefing the students nervously pulled back their bows and delivered some powerful and accurate arrows to the targets. As their confidence grew so did the scores. Chloe Saxton completely mastered it and managed all three targets.
 After some well-earned lunch it was time for the final set of challenges, first up was the egg and spoon race (well, table tennis ball and a badminton racquet!). This game was harder than it looked with many students having to start the race over and over after repeatedly dropping their ‘eggs’, then crawling through the hoopla hoops, basketball launch, jigsaw puzzle and many more before the final round of on the spot skipping which provided all of us with a challenge and plenty of laughter, one student in particular nearly lost his trousers as his feet scrambled to keep him upright …Poor fella!
After all the giggles in the sports hall the air fell calm and quiet, we soon realised it was due to the suspense building for the awards ceremony! The bronze medal was collected by Frankie Noon, Silver medal was awarded to Aaron Oaks Perry and the winner and collecting the Gold medal was Samira Jawad. They were all greatly received with a round of applause which rounded off a brilliant day that was had by all.
Once again our students were a credit to the school with their impeccable attitude and behaviour. Well Done J
