I hate men, but I also realize how heavy of a responsibility that really puts onto the mothers of sons. Women have equal weight on how they raise their sons, for we are all impacted by the actions of men. More than daughters, sons absolutely need reinforcing, strong teaching, and great emotional support to make it through to the other side as good-natured human beings. I can stake my life on that statement because I have lived and breathed raising small humans for a huge chunk of my existence. I see it everyday, in and out. Girls who play gently. Who share without prompting. Listen the first time you ask. Boys who play pretend war and tear up a room in seconds when given free reign. Hurt and wrestle each other for fun. Destruction. Inability to process and express emotions for fear of scrutiny by others. Bottled up anger and angst. So much already stored in the bodies of little boys. I canβt even begin to imagine how that shows up later in life when mishandled. I hate to generalize, but you see the same patterns appear long enough to conclude it must be true.
I just know itβs not too lateβ to raise boys with kind hearts, less fragility, less inflated egos, and an ability to be empathetic and respectful while those traits not be identified as hyper-feminine or for lack of better terms, βgay,β βsimp,β or whatever the hell people call guys who actually show up for the people they care about and love.
And for current moms of sonsβ please, please, please do better. Be proactive in teaching disciplined manners. How to view and treat women. How to give and love without expecting an endgame result from the opposite gender. And most importantly, how to love themselves. Enough to embrace their emotions. Find healing in ways that arenβt always supressing and pushing everything down. They are worthy of just as much emotional freedom and care as we women are given.
To feel is to be free. Truly. I wish men could feel safe to do it more.
What a life this could beβ if all of this were so simple and attainable.
I believe with all my heart, that men can be both protective and soft. Both masculine and feminine. And it takes a real man to be both.
If the bar for women is naturally set high from birth (to be βgood, pleasant, niceβ girls) thereβs no reason for men to not meet us there. Ask for better and expect better always.
