Actively avoiding someone in a town as small as theirs was easier than she’d ever thought possible. Somehow Hazel had managed to do so for nearly a year and a half when it came to Chase Hewitt, she’d gotten so complacent with doing so that she didn’t even think about check her surroundings anymore, much less realizing the familiar territory she’d been walking in that day, had she been a little more observant then she might have been able to dodge him when he turned the corner, might have been able to pull the two Samoyed she’d been walking in the other direction and just avoided this encounter altogether, but she hadn’t been and she wasn’t and instead of turning the other way at the sight of him, Hazel simply froze, right in the middle of the damn sidewalk. “Uh– hello,” she managed, voice definitely raised a few octaves. “Fancy runnin’ into you here.” @chase-hewitt

Chase was typically good at aversion, avoiding the things that made him uncomfortable with skill, and as he stepped around the corner, he knew it was already too late for this instance. In front of him stood the woman he had thought he was gonna love forever. He’d been ready to commit, getting the ring, setting up the plans to do it with her family around, knowing how much they meant to her. Hell he’d even gotten permission from both her brother’s, her dad and her cousin. But she’d said no, and now here he was, seeing her up close for the first time since they’d had their talk. He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly as he gave her a bit of a nod, his feelings rushing back almost as if they hadn’t left, but now when he looked at her they were still coupled with the hurt. “Yeah, pretty crazy, huh?” He looked to the ground, unsure of what to say, desperate to break the tension though. “These guys makin’ you work hard for your money today?” He gestured to the dogs, the only barrier between the two of them.

“Oh, Chase. You are a flirt, and I’ll tell you what. I am into it! Wasn’t plannin’ on anythin’ in particular, I just want to drink and dance. I’d be delighted if you joined me.”

“I mean, with a dress like that, you gotta have somewhere good to go.  Drinkin’ and dancin’ seems like it might be just that occasion, should we head out to Mobile? What a coincidence, cause I’d be delighted to escort you.” 

“She loves cell phones,” Willow tells him, drawing out the word love. “Mostly because she’s a little vain. She loves seeing herself in the reflection or on camera.”

Which is what Edie is looking at now: her reflection in Chase’s unlit phone. “We get it, Edie! You’re beautiful.”

Chase was beyond entertained as he watched the chicken literally checking herself out in his cell phone. It might make the top list of strangest things he’d seen on Main St. “I gotta know, when did she get to be so vain, or has she always been like this?” He held the phone out supporting the bird’s habit. “I mean, you’re right, she is beautiful, who am I to take that from her.”

Taylor had just left Busy Bee’s with a bouquet of purple lilies for her house, since the last one had died on her. She stepped out onto the sidewalk, not even noticing that the heel of her shoe started to break off, until it did, making her trip and quickly hold on to something.”Oh no….no, no no, no….” she whined, looking down at her precious heel. “I had these for three summers now, why did you break…” @frostfordstart​

Chase had been heading into Busy Bee’s set out to get his mom some flowers on account she was mad at him and his dad for not helping with something yesterday, and this was how he was gonna apologize, when he saw the girl almost fall. Reaching out to help steady her, he was glad when she held onto something. Watching for a moment before speaking. “I think cause ya had em for three summers.” He offered with a little shrug. “Think that’s an awful long time to be wearing a shoe. I know I gotta replace my work boots at least three times a year. Ya alright though?”

“Dude, be gentle.” Ace groaned as the other dropped him rather abruptly  — or was it just him feeling it that way? — on the seat and his head spun and throbbed as if someone was hammering inside. It had probably been a bad idea to drink that much and he was facing the consequences now in the form of a raging headache. “Wait, what’d ya’ do with my glass?” The words coming out slurring. “It was still full!”

Chase let his eyes roll at the groan coming from Ace, a little chuckle escaping as he watched him, once he knew he was secure in the seat. “I was gentle, you’re just bein’ a wuss.” He teased, needing a moment. “I gave your glass back to the bar tender, cause you finished it actually, which probably wasn’t the smartest move on your part. Gotta learn to hold your liquor better, buddy.”

“Twenty dollars right now, all yours, no strings attached,” Sol states, holding up the twenty he spoke of, before adding one string adjacent caveat, “If you can guess the weirdest cause of a fire I’ve ever uncovered. One guess maximum. Go.”

Chase placed his fingers to his chin in contemplation. “Do I get to ask any questions, like yes or no ones? Or do I at least get a little hint? I’m probably guessing just blindly, aren’t I?” Twenty bucks was twenty bucks and he was gonna try his very best to get it if he could. “A bird droppin a lit cigarette on a house?” He said, his eyebrow raising.

It’s not uncommon to see Willow being tailed by a rotund little hen named Edie, but her feathered friend still likes to surprise her. This time Edie takes off in a waddling sprint, very intent on checking out what the nearest person has in their hands.

She makes her little chicken noises from their heels, while Willow laughs. “Please, you don’t have to give into her demands! She’s less threatening than she appears.”

Looking down as he heard the strange noises, Chase was a little shocked to see a chicken begging at his feet almost like his dog did. “It’s nothin’ really excitin’, just my cell phone. The excitin’ stuff is what pops up when it’s unlocked.” He showed the phone to the chicken like he would with a kid. “She’s just nosy, nothing wrong there.”

“Oh my god, how do I look? Is it too short? Too shiny? I mean… like I know it is… but. Gotta have some flair for a night out! How do you think I look?”

“I think calling something too short is just, blasphemous. I think that’s the perfect dress, and you look stunnin’. Where you goin out to tonight? And am I invited?”

“I’m not sayin’ this town is dry, but.” And Rayleigh stopped, because she thought she sounded like her mother. “I am sayin’ my mom’s finally run outta people to set me up with. That must be a good thing.”

“Well damn, sounds like you’ve been pretty busy there. Maybe ya oughta start venturing out to Mobile or something, look out that way. I’m sure the pickin’ ain’t as dry out there. ”

“Oh, really, that’s how that works?” Dot played along as Destiny explained to her, in some very mumbly words, that her and her sister came from storks to their door. Laughing, she glanced up at the nearest person to them in the park, “Did you here that? All babies come from storks.” // @frostfordstart​

Chase had been just sitting there, soaking up the sun when he heard the woman next to him speak. His ears perked up and he sat forward a little more on the bench. Observing the situation he began to nod his head with a smug look on his face. “I did. Ya know I almost caught a stork once? I was little and it was bringin’ my baby sister, so I set a trap, and I had him, but my daddy set him free.” He’d told the story to the little girl, looking up at the woman after. “True story.”
