āHarsh. I brave the storm for the pleasure of your company and the first thing you do is insult me.ā His voice was smooth, lazy with amusement. āStill, if youāre so convinced Iām better quiet, maybe Iāll give you what you want. For once. Just donāt act surprised when you find yourself missing the sound of my voice.ā
He leaned against the wall beside her, folding his arms like he wasnāt dripping wet, like the storm was nothing. The silence stretched; a deliberate act on his part, intense and poignant. He didnāt look away. If anything, his gaze lingered longer, unblinking, the kind of steady contact that made it clear he wasnāt moving first, that he was taking her at her word and also testing how long they would hold. A faint twitch of a smirk ghosted over his mouth as he watched her, and he shifted slowly, running a hand through his wet hair, droplets that had caught the strands scattering at the action. His arm brushed hers in a manner that made it seem like it could have happened accidentally but then it remained there, not enough to crowd, but more than enough to be felt. Intentional physicality. Impossible to ignore.
Finally, when the weight of it pressed hardest, he let a soft murmur slip out, low and languid, and threaded with challenge. āCareful what you wish for⦠silence can be far louder when you notice whoās sharing it.ā
"You act like it's the first time when it's quickly become one of my most treasured hobbies," Charlie quipped back easily when he'd commented on her insulting him. When he seemed content with complying and staying quiet, she knew she couldn't just trust that. She kept her gaze laser focused onto the street, watching as water ricocheted off of the cobblestones. She was almost trying too hard to focus anywhere but on the body beside her, immediately feeling the weight of his eyes on her. She could see the shadow of him in her periphery, trying to keep herself from rolling her eyes or sighing when she felt as though he was boring a hole into her with his calm and calculated stare. Charlie's weight shifted in her boots as she kept trying to keep her eyes out forward, not wanting to give him any satisfaction with the little game he was playing. How could he be so infuriating and attention-drawing just by standing there. It was maddening to her.
Her skin betrayed her as it prickled softly at the feeling of his arm brushing against hers. Charlie's eyes drifted slightly to catch the sight of his damp shirt clinging to his muscular build and the water dripping from his dark hair. Shit. She snapped her gaze forward again. There was no way he didn't catch that. He wasn't letting her live that down, even if it was with his silent methods. She bit down on the inside of her cheek. "I was right, you didn't last very long," Charlie commented plainly when he spoke up about the silence. "And you can stop with the soulful staring. If youāre waiting for me to blush, youāll be here until the next storm."
