Pigeon Point - Half Moon Bay

In light of the newest American trauma, I thought I’d share these photos of Half Moon Bay’s lighthouse, Pigeon Point, which doubles as a hostel, or it did at one point.

Pigeon Point is almost impossibly still. By that point, I had become an anxious lighthouse explorer, which meant, I pulled the car over several times to snap a picture before reaching the lighthouse itself, knowing that half of California’s lighthouses aren’t accessible, and it’s better to get a picture where it’s visible than to miss an opportunity and need to backtrack. Pigeon Point is open to the public and even has a parking lot.

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse - March ‘22

A frigid day in March. The walk along the breakwater was almost deceptively long, especially with the wind in our faces.

Faro de Sao Vicente and neighboring lighthouses - May ‘22

It was a bizarre, hazy day. We had breakfast in Armação de Pêra, lunch with palomas in Lagos, and dinner in the hills in Faro. As with many lighthouse treks, there were a lot of wrong turns, backtracking, and hiccups. The traditional lighthouse used to be red- and white-striped. Now, it’s usual for the design to feature red and white without the colors needing to pattern in any specific way. The colors, more than any others, help distinguish the station from land, water, and sky alike.

West Point Light - August 5th, 2022

A clear blue day lighthouse-hunting in Seattle. We wandered into nearby Magnolia, the setting for many Washington-based novels, found vegan pastries and books. Drank sweet coffees. Window shopped. Huge pots of hanging flowers lined the streets. I felt like my grandmother oohing and ahhing at them as we passed.
