"It's what should have happened"
More thoughts on the Grove family
Mrs. Grove seems to have accepted that her husband harmed these young women and that is why Becca did what she did. I want to be clear that I am not condemning Mrs. Grove because women do not have power in Gilead. If she knew her husband was assaulting Becca, what could she have done? It has been made clear many times over this season that the girls are blamed for tempting men. Even in very innocent situations. So if Mrs. Grove knew and attempted to report, all she would have accomplished is condemning her daughter as defiled. And that's gross to say because nobody is defiled after being abused. But that is the reality of this world.
So I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else thinks maybe Mrs. Grove always knew who her husband was? It makes me sad for her. We really don't know this woman's story at all. There seems to be a hint that Becca is their biological child, but we don't know how Dr. Grove and Mrs. Grove met. We don't know where or who they were when the United States fell.
The unknown to Mrs. Grove story really emphasizes how much women can and will suffer in a society that absolutely prioritizes patriarchy. In a society where women bear the brunt of all the wrongs a man can inflict who and where can she turn to? Silence seems to be the only solace.
