the chao are heavily influenced by their environment and the people around them!!!!
maybe their dna is so unstable (from the deterioration) but also so receptive that they take on traits of the things around them and skills to to traverse the areas they're in??? maybe chao gardens are FUCK FUCK WAIT SONIC SAYS THAT HE WONDERS IF CHAO GARDENS WERE ON THE STARFALL ISLANDS BUT HE SAYS THAT IT'S NOT THE RIGHT CLIMATE, maybe the chao need a really specific climate similar to the ancients' planet to be able to live happily!!! maybe that's why they're also so close to the ancients' ruins in the knuckles short, it's some kind of weirdly familiar place to them!!!
