If we're looking at it as a literal lore thing "Silver gets to the past bc of mysterious portals he doesn't know the origin of" kind of looks lame but if you think about it from like. A character standpoint. There's so much going on there.
At any time this guy could be yoinked to the past with *zero* knowledge of why? Every casual interaction he has in the interrim is a constant ticking time bomb until some horrific event? He could be put through hell and a portal to pick him back up *still* wouldn't appear, he'd be stuck knowing whatever comes next must be so much worse. And then when the job is done, he's just fully expected to go back without any assurance if this time will be the last one he sees all his friends he actually cares about, and if he chooses to ignore the future's calling the portals just grow more and more insistent until they can't be ignored.
All the while he's just smiling through it, bc he's that kind of guy. It's neat :3
