i think i don't do a very good job of posting on here, and i'm really fascinated by that. my life is really, really uneventful- a big part of why i created an account on this website was so i'd have something to do- and yet i have no idea what to post. i used to do movie reviews, but lately i've found it quite difficult to watch anything. there's actually a half-finished review of the last of us part ii sitting in my drafts right now. for some reason, i just can't motivate myself to finish it. and i know no one is really waiting to read it (or this, for that matter), but i find it really cathartic to at least put my thoughts into words. verbalizing things is really important to me, even though i basically never do it.

i guess the point of that was just that i'm probably gonna be more active in the future. hopefully.

recently i watched the netflix documentary on the gardner museum robbery, and i was really into it. so maybe i'll write a review on that. who knows. i do think a big part of why i liked it so much is how local it is. i've gone to the gardner almost once a year for my entire life, so it was weird to see it and the neighborhood around it in a netflix show. if i write a review i'll dig deeper into that phenomenon. maybe it'll even get its own post.

you think i jest, but you are wrong. i’m actually like, deeply upset by how negatively people treat peeing. everybody pees, right? i mean, even if not everybody peed i’d be saddened by society’s view of it. i’ll try to make my case in this post, but i think that might be difficult. i have a lot of trouble putting what i think into words.

i just think peeing is a really normal thing and it makes me sad that it constantly gets treated like a joke. that’s pretty much it. 

also, it’s been a while- sorry about that. not that i have any regular readers. i mean, i might. i wouldn’t know. anyways, i’m back with a post about pee.

i saw this movie because a Girl i know wanted to. i know. pretty lame of me. regardless, i did watch it and i did have some thoughts. not many, but enough to post here (something i haven’t done in some time). this film is an edgy and artsy version of the classic hansel and gretel story, which to be honest, i’ve totally forgotten.

a brief summary of my thoughts: it’s alright. (elaboration to follow)

i suppose it would be best to start with the positive(s?). the visuals in this film are unbelievable. it’s really quite beautiful. honestly, that was the most interesting part of the trailer to me, and i was delighted to find that the actual movie was just as pretty. oz perkins and whoever the cinematographer was did a fantastic job.

i’d say that a lot of the film’s flaws were sort of obscured by how pretty it is. originally i’d planned to have a cutesy joke here about how the witch hides behind the quaint/warm/inviting disguise and it would be a sick connection to my review of the movie, but i decided not to because it’s stupid.  i think my objections with the film are largely byproducts of my innate fear of horror films and how much of a struggle it is for me to watch them. i got so frustrated watching gretel and hansel not understand how fucking creepy the witch was. even when they did it was like they didn’t, up until the very end.

the film’s big subversion on the story was to have gretel be a witch too (wow!) and have that whole dynamic between her and the witch. it was interesting, but i’ve forgotten a lot of the details. i think that’s the biggest problem with the movie. all that i remember of it are the visuals. however, those visuals were very compelling. perhaps compelling enough that i’d say watching the film was a pleasurable experience overall.

sorry i was gone for so long, i had to go home over break (ewwwwwwwww). i fucking hate my family. they are so irritating. except for my sister and my cat. i love them and would die for them. except that i wouldn’t because i really fear death.

do you fear death? i certainly do. sometimes i wish i could die (an idea that i have articulated multiple times before on this very blog), but then i realize that that would involve dying, which is not ideal.

the kid next to me in the library is doing the fucking “it’s every day bro” rap from team 10. i might literally stab myself in the throat with my pen. or maybe her. that would probably solve the problem a lot faster.

how is your break going? mine has been very shitty. my mom told me to purchase paper plates for “christmas.” however, i misheard her, and i absolutely copped some ceramic bowls. they were really hot, if i don’t say so myself. mother was not happy and she ripped my ass for it. the rest of break has been very boring.

i realize that this movie came out a decade ago. that is very evident at times during a modern viewing. i tried not to let it weigh too heavily on my review of the film. speaking of, the movie is essentially an anti-romantic comedy starring a young joseph gordon-levitt and an also young zooey deschanel. from what i’ve read, this was basically the movie that kickstarted both of their careers. this review will have some spoilers.

a basic summary of my thoughts: it’s good. (more nuance to follow)

this movie has a very indie feel, even though it’s very much not an indie movie. it’s got a cool, “quirky,” indie movie soundtrack, (the smiths! wow, so quirky!) and the two leads give off indie vibes. mostly deschanel as summer though. she’s super hot, but like, very much a manic pixie dream girl. that type of character always bothers me, but i actually found gordon-levitt’s character, tom, much more annoying. he’s just a very... i don’t know... he doesn’t pay attention to some very easy to understand things that summer says to him. she makes it clear from the beginning that she doesn’t want a relationship, but he can’t seem to wrap his head around it. i mean generally he doesn’t seem like the most emotionally mature guy. to be honest though, i can’t say that i wasn’t rooting for their relationship to work out while it was happening.

there were a couple of scenes in the movie that were legitimately excellent. the bit right after they have sex when tom walks through the city is great. there were a lot of somewhat heightened, dreamlike parts of the movie, but that really took it to another level in a very impressive way. i also really enjoyed the expectations vs. reality scene. i thought it was a brilliant idea and they executed it perfectly.

ultimately, my favorite part of the film was thinking about it afterwards. summer is obviously associated with the color blue, and when tom visits her apartment for the first time, he ignores all of the blue paper cranes to play with the lone red one. guess what color autumn is wearing in the final scene of the movie? red. i’m also convinced that summer’s final scene in the movie is a dream. there’s no way she somehow randomly shows up at exactly the right time and says exactly the right things to help tom move on from her. especially because she says a lot of what he wants to hear, not what i think she’d say. finally, is tom about to go through the same ordeal all over again with autumn, or will things be different? i personally think they’ll be the same.
