there was a pause on both ends. you knew what needed to be said, but it wasn’t coming out as easy as you’d hoped it would. on the other hand, mark wanted nothing more than to be laying right next to you.

if you’ve come home stressed the day before he’d plan a cozy day for the two of you to relax. some days he’ll wake up early to cook up breakfast; if you were really feeling worn out, he’d go as far as to print out a ‘menu’ with options like “water on the rocks” to be fancy. always expect a whipped cream happy face on your pancakes.

he’s a gamer. we know this, he enjoys being left alone to play games but recently he’ll wait for you to join him. he wouldn’t bombard you either. once he notices that you’ve finished whatever you were doing, only then will he ask if you’d want to play with him. if you didn’t really feel like playing and just watching, he’d pull you into his lap and stay like that. he just wants you near, the feeling of your heartbeat soothes him.

You couldn’t place it but he was so, pretty. You’ve seen him before at the bus stop but never paid any mind to anyone that early in the morning. 

The ride goes on in silence—comfortable silence. 

“You smell good.” He says, still looking out the window.

“Heading to work?” He turns to face you, arms crossed on his lap. He has such a gentle apearence it makes you want to hug him.

“Sorry?” Lost in your own thoughts you look back at him with an empty head trying to recall what he’s said.

“To work?” He repeat’s nervously, “Sorry, I don’t wanna make you uncomfortable.” And goes back to watching the clouds shift and form.

“No no, you’re right.” You tap his shoulder and shake your head as to get his attention once again. “Every morning like a robot.”

The time goes by with nothing but pure interest in one another. Talking about nothing and yet everything altogether.

Soon the bus empties and you’re coming close to your stop. An unfamiliar feeling of dread fills you, “The next is mine.”

“Oh, okay. Well..” He pauses to think of a smooth transition to asking for a simple lunch together. As thoughts cloud his brain, the bus comes to slowing halt.

“It was nice meeting you.” You say as you grab your bag and stand to your feet.

“Wait!” He calls out, hurriedly blurts out, “Would you like to get coffee sometime?” He chews his lip in attempt to hide his nervousness.

“I would love too, tomorrow?”

“Okay, see you then.”

As you head for the bus exit he sits back with a sigh. Prouder than he’s ever been of himself.

He watches the pedestrians walking aside the street with a light smile, seemingly — getting lost in thought.
