2026's Obsession Confirms The Next Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movie Can Work
Article by Zoe Miskelly
The 2026 movie that effectively serves as a prequel of sorts for the next The Texas Chainsaw Massacre film paints a seriously promising picture for the upcoming film for more than one reason. When it comes to the world of horror movies, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series is easily one of the most famous franchises of all time.
With its distinctive scenes and characters and its consistent ability to horrify audiences in ways they may not have previously realized were possible, the success of the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has lived on throughout the decades. However, the franchise itself has been at something of a standstill for a fair few years now, with the last movie in the series currently having released in 2022.
That said, though, a new film is on the horizon, which could well be just what the franchise needs to reignite its success once more. Though there have been some prior concerns online about how said movie will fare on release, one of 2026's most popular horror movies thus far has shown that the next release for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie series could be a serious success if it follows along the same lines.
Obsession is an exciting release not just because it has proved a suitably terrifying horror movie for audiences to watch, but also because it displays the talents of those involved in the film in a major way.
This is of course most clear with the cast's main actors, but its overall quality reflects decidedly well upon the film's director and writer, Curry Barker - which bodes particularly well given Barker has been tapped to be the director for the next upcoming The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie.
Previously, online discussions about Barker being attached to the horror movie had seen some trepidation be expressed, as Curry Barker's main prior movie experience was in creating Milk & Serial, which is an hour-long short horror film that is available on YouTube. Given Barker thus didn't have clear experience in cinematic releases or longer movie formats, it seemed possible these aspects of movie making might have had a better chance of going awry, or at least providing less assured results.
Now, though, Obsession's critical reception and early box office success make this matter look very different. In particular, Obsession's ability to take relatively well-tred horror territory - that of what is effectively a curse and its impact on those embroiled in it - into fresh-feeling and legitimately unsettling directions bodes particularly well for the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre film, given this is hopefully an approach that the impending film will pull off for that franchise too.
Obsession is a major hit not just in terms of its critical reception thus far, but also in terms of its box office gross. Though Obsession has not had the hardest-hitting opening in 2026's history thus far, its budget - which is reported to be around $750k (as per The New Yorker) - means that its current earnings already far exceed its costs, making it financially viable in a serious way too.
Obsession's box office results currently sit at just over $31 million (via Box Office Mojo and The Numbers), meaning even if the film didn't gross another cent more from this point onwards - which is unlikely - it would still have made over thirty times its budget, thanks to the more grounded approach taken with the film's story and visual effects.
While it's likely the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie will have a higher budget due to the fame of the franchise it comes from, Curry Barker being able to do a lot with a lower budget makes the film seem all the more promising, both because it supports the idea the movie will lean into things like practical effects, and because it's clear the film doesn't need billions in order to become something special.
In many ways, Obsession is the perfect setup for the impending Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, as it shows what's possible for the film and the strength of Curry Barker, while also providing audiences with a horror story that delves into a very different place compared to what can be expected with the latter franchise. That said, hopefully the next The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie is able to repeat many parts of what made Obsession work so well.

This server would be 18+ due to the mature nature of the franchise itself. While this is not a NSFW server, conversations may include mature topics connected to the series.
I’d like to believe the 4 “no” votes were minors foiled by the 18+ rule 💀
That said… most overwhelmingly said yes, so Chainsaw Country is officially in the works.
It’s currently a work in progress while I finish setting up channels, bots, roles, and general server wrangling.
This will be an 18+ general Texas Chainsaw Massacre community for discussion, art, writing, lore, horror talk, and general fandom nonsense. Not primarily an NSFW server, though there will be optional channels.
Because I’m not using my personal Discord account for this, @ohmotherdeer will be assisting with moderation / age verification, which will make things easier and help keep things organized.
Access will be manually approved since I’d prefer not to rely solely on honor-system click verification for an adult space.

Curry Barker’s ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ May Be a Family Affair
The 'Obsession' director's got an idea for what to do with 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' and it may be inspired by the series' 2003 remake.
Article by Justin Carter

It was only just recently that we learned Obsession director Curry Barker would rev up a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie for A24. Already, he’s teasing out some of his vision for what he’ll do with the dormant slasher franchise, and provided some insight on his own history with it.
Talking to Total Film, Barker assured his plans to do something “different” than previous Texas films and build on what’s already there. One thing he wants to hone in on, for example, is “the uncomfortability of family. I want to lean into the rawness of what’s going on there—there’s some really messed up stuff happening at that farm. I genuinely feel there’s so much potential for that concept that has not been realized.”
Barker loves the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but he confessed that his favorite entry in the series is actually the 2003 remake. Directed by Marcus Nispel, the film—which, like the 1974 original, focuses on Leatherface and his family terrorizing a group of young adults—was a financial success that led to other horror franchises rebooting themselves. Reactions to it were mixed at the time, and Barker clearly leans more toward positive, calling it “actually a decent remake. It was like my first horror movie I’d ever seen when I was a kid.”
With that background info, his desire to examine the Hewitt family makes a bit more sense: Barker feels the idea has “so much [that] hasn’t been dived into,” so of course he’s going to dive into it. As to what form that exploration will take, we’ll have to wait for more info on his Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie to determine that. But watching Obsession when that comes out on May 15 may offer some hints as to where his mind’s at.

Curry Barker Promises Brutal ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Reimagining with Heart
Article by Alex DiVincenzo
Following last week’s announcement that Curry Barker has been tapped to helm a new reimagining of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Obsession filmmaker has made his first public comments on the project.
“I love the original,” Curry said of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 genre-defining classic during a recent Q&A. “I think that one is really raw and was really good for its time. And I actually think the 2003 remake is actually quite good too, but it could also be from, there’s a nostalgia there.”
He added, “A lot of people are excited about [the reboot], but a lot of people are like, ‘Put this thing to bed. It’s all been done.’ I beg to differ. Seriously. I really think that the potential for that series has not been fully realized. I actually feel like a lot of the remakes went the opposite direction than it should have gone.”
Barker continued, “I’m really excited to do a Texas Chainsaw Massacre that’s not just about a guy chasing some people around with a chainsaw; that has some heart to it. You care about these characters and want to see them survive, and it’s brutal.”
A24 is behind the new film, which will be produced by Spooky Pictures’ Roy Lee & Steven Schneider, Exurbia Film’s Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel, & Kim Henkel (co-writer of the original film), and Stuart Manashil. Ben Ross of Image Nation serves as executive producer.
A24 is concurrently developing a Texas Chainsaw Massacre TV series spearheaded by Strange Darling filmmaker JT Mollner.
Barker recently wrapped production on his next horror film, Anything But Ghosts, starring Aaron Paul. Obsession opens in theaters on May 15.
Horror phenom Curry Barker will direct A24's reboot of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre."

‘Obsession’ Filmmaker Curry Barker to Direct ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Reimagining at A24 (EXCLUSIVE)
By Matt Donnelly
—
Upstart filmmaker Curry Barker continues his mainstream Hollywood takeover with a big new gig: director on A24’s anticipated film reboot of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
Variety has learned exclusively that Barker will take the lead on the project, billed by insiders as a “reimagining” of the 1974 horror classic created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel. Barker’s vision for the famed killer Leatherface and the gaggle of young things he terrorizes is under wraps. The film is being developed alongside a “Texas Chainsaw” TV series from Barnstorm’s Glen Powel and Dan Cohen, and director JT Mollner.
Barker’s rise has been swift, and Focus Features is less than a month out from releasing his acclaimed festival player “Obsession,” about a man whose wish for the love of a female friend turns deadly. That film was acquired in a bidding war that fetched a $14 million sale out of the Toronto International Film Festival. “Chainsaw” takes Barker from his $800 debut feature “Milk & Serial” on YouTube to one of the most prestigious arthouse brands in the industry.
Curry is currently in production on “Anything But Ghosts” at Blumhouse, serving as director, co-writer and star. The film centers on two fraudulent paranormal investigators who are forced to face real ghosts — and the lies underpinning their business. He’s also part of the internet sketch comedy duo That’s a Bad Idea alongside creative partner Cooper Tomlinson. Barker is repped by Underground Management, United Talent Agency and The Lede Company.
The new “Chainsaw” film will be produced by Roy Lee and Steven Schneider of Spooky Pictures, and Stuart Manashil and Exurbia Films’ Pat Cassidy, Ian Henkel and Kim Henkel. Ben Ross of Image Nation serves as executive producer.
There are nine films in the “Chainsaw” canon, including 1986’s “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2,” which was directed by Hooper and written by L.M. Kit Carson, and 1995’s “The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre” aka “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation,” written and directed by Henkel and starring Renée Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey. A novel, a comic book series and three video games have also been released under the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” IP.
A24 won the prize piece of IP in a heated auction last year, formally announcing in February, and fended off competing offers from companies including Blumhouse. Verve repped the rights and was intent on partnering with A24’s reach and forward-looking creative approach, while still preserving the film’s legacy.
Bit o'trivia ** I see this set-shot of Jim and Marilyn in the back of the gas station was shot on 8/15/73, three days before we shot the cemetery scenes, on Saturday, August 18, my 22nd birthday.
Phil: "Any thoughts you can share on working with Jim Siedow? His scenes with you were brilliantly frightening."
Me:
I wish I had worked directly with Jim! I was there, not really in the same scene with the boys in the van. The only time I got to work with Jim was at the gas station. Marilyn and I were getting our Cokes, fishing for our change purses, digging for change, etc., never interacting with Jim and Robert, his sidekick.
Jim's particular brand of psychopathy was incredibly nuanced. One minute, you think he's a square dude, and the next, there's a little flicker in his eye, or some glance, as he seems to go in and out of rational behavior, to giggling about torture. Between him and Ed, later, when Jim arrives back at the Sawyer house with Sally, they really play off one another beautifully, yet they're distinctly different psychos. Ed's all-out loony-tune hardcore psycho versus Jim's is great to watch. Here, Old Man Sawyer kidnaps this gorgeous blonde and is dragging her into the house, and what annoys the Old Man? Leatherface has sawed up the front door. "Look what your brother did to that door!!!" Credit to Kim Henkle for coming up with that great line!
Cut to 2014, Austin, Texas, Philip Anselmo's wonderful TCSM celebration, Housecore Horror Film Festival, our cinematographer, by now 'award-winning cinematographer' Daniel Pearl, joined us for the first time since Bill, and I'd 'come out' (after 35 years in '08) to appear and do a Q&A with us. Danny shared tons of behind-the-scenes TCSM stories none of us had ever heard. During filming, the cast was mainly hanging out together, and the crew had done the same. Here I was always worried about Daniel perched under the swing with his camera, and me worrying about protecting my assets. It turns out that when Sally and I are digging for change, getting our Cokes, Tobe is talking to us, keeping us distracted as Daniel is simultaneously crouched down, scooting around by the Coke machine, following us, shooting our assets from below. Tobe kept chit-chatting away with us, yakety-yak. Teamwork.
This had to have been before we did the infamous Dolly shot of Pam walking up to the Sawyer house. Until Danny told us that little tidbit that day at Housecore in September 2014, I'd never known what they were up to. Now, of course, IDC at all, not one little bit. In fact, now I think, "Oh, yeah, good job."
