Yep, it’s a first degree misdemeanor. Those found guilty of false reporting can spend up to a year in jail and have a fine of $1,000. For minors, they’d most likely be put in juvenile corrections and their parents would have to pay the fine.

You absolute dingleberries. AO3 is the better platform. Or would you rather deal with the draconian shit FFN pulls? Does no one remember when FFN pulled this EXACT SHIT by scrubbing the site of literally everything higher than a T rating? Does no one remember how you couldn’t post anything slightly questionable because “THINK OF THE CHILDREN WHO USE THIS SITE!”. Remember the trolls? The general lack of organization? Do you fuckers wanna go back to that? Because I sure as hell don’t. And while I realize that things like Wattpad, Quizilla, and LiveJournal exist they pale in comparison to AO3′s tagging system. Also real class act trying to take down a nonprofit site. What these nutbags fail to realize is that if they do manage to get the site down, which will not happen I guarantee because the FBI is never going to take this seriously because Fiction is not fucking Reality, that there goes all the fanfiction they do wanna read. The lack of self awareness is staggering.
I doubt these people are old enough to remember when it was FF.net or fuck all else. You wanna talk about bad shit, fucking FFN HAD no tag filters, or tags period. All you got was a shit summary, possibly any pairings that would show up (2 of them at BEST), a rating, and a vague genre. That’s it. So all the shit they find squeamish that they want gone, that you can easily filter on AO3, you couldn’t on FFN.

this is so dumb. also the reason there are penalties for falsely reporting crimes is that it wastes the fbi’s time. time they could otherwise spend investigating actual child pornography cases where actual children are being harmed. a fictional story involving underage sex (or any other criminal thing like murder, rape, theft etc) is not illegal. it would only be illegal if it contained actual child pornography - i.e. actual images/videos/etc of underage people being sexually abused/exploited. that is not the case.
so what the antis here want is a world where the FBI can arrest someone for writing something they don’t like even though it harms no real people. i.e. the antis want government-sanctioned censorship. there’s a word for that - it’s called a police state. if you want “purity laws” where the government can dictate what fiction is morally allowable there are many oppressive authoritarian regimes that have laws like that right now. if you are so eager to live under a dictatorship why don’t you move to one of those countries and see how you like living somewhere without free speech protections. i guarantee it will not feel like a safe space to you.
Antis:
1. The FBI have limited resources. False reporting like this slows down the amount of time and resources they can spend on true reports. That is, these people are putting actual real children in danger to stop people writing stuff they don’t like about fake people (some including fake children, some not).
2. Even if this did somehow magically have some effect on AO3 for some reason (it won’t, AO3 isn’t violating American law), that wouldn’t “make space for a better platform for fanfic to pop up”. That space already exists. You can make a better archive right now, and if it’s good, people will use it. That’s what OTW did to make AO3. New archives don’t passively spawn into existence into the Allotted Archive Space if one goes down, and they’re free to use so it’s not like people reading makes them reluctant to read from another. YOU have to build it, and AO3 existing won’t make that any harder or any easier. Killing AO3, if you hypothetically could do that, wouldn’t make someone else build the archive you want for you.
antis can make their own archive for fic if they want. nobody is stopping you, go ahead and do it.
ao3 is literally open source. i’ve seen multiple coders offer to build an archive to anti specifications multiple times. all they would have to do is host the site and find a way to implement their draconian rules (spoiler alert: not possible on the scale they want. we HAD archives like that in the past. they were all small, fandom specific, and used only because there was no real alternative). no author worth reading is going to pick a website that will arbitrarily yank their work without warning over one staunchly against censorship. that’s why all the good fic is on ao3 when ffn still exists.
these people don’t actually want a “better archive.” they want to bully, harass, and harm others while maintaining a delusional self-image of righteousness and activism. they don’t want ao3 to go away because then they would have to find something else to bitch about, and it would predictably be nothing of any value in the real world. like how rather than enjoy their victorious utopia after the tumblr porn ban, most of them just moved to twitter because that’s where all the easy targets are, now.
All I think of now is the season 3 quote from June in Handmaid’s Tale where she says something along: “…before the Internet raids and the decency codes…” and I often think about the novel and the show and how it shows how an urge to protect the good and innocent, can sometimes unknowingly become a tool for suppression. Fuck decency codes, fuck self-righteous assholes no matter which camp they belong to. Fuck those who claim that it’s to make things better, because ao3 isn’t a platform for universal moral uplifting and I’m sick and tired of people who can’t separate fiction from real life. The most underrated love story of all times
ok but like… this is one of my favourite scenes?? Because until this scene you’ve only vaguely heard about this ‘Spanish princess’ and she’s essentially a plot device and then she appears on screen for like 1 minute and she’s a real person with feelings and wants and an unexpected backstory that you get from the context of this one scene. And then presumably her parents give up on their marriage plans and she goes on to marry the man she loves (right then and there maybe?? idk there’s an entire wedding sitting there that no one’s using).
And all the female characters from this batshit crazy movie are like this. Even the Evil Stepmother™️ gets a few lines about her own childhood.
Anyway I love this movie. It’s so cheesy and tropey but also Leonardo Da Vinci swears at the Prince, and Cinderella cuts a bitch, and Anjelica Houston’s eyebrows carry entire scenes.
