Ahh I missed a day of study yesterday so I'm going back to the beginning! I was soo tired yesterday and I needed to sleep. I'm just glad I have the opportunity to keep learning at my own pace :)
Today I listened to a podcast, practiced a wee bit of speaking, and did a listening exercise (which was really helpful!)

I was soo tired today and after I watched an Irish language show I was so sure that I wouldn't be able to do anything else and that that would be my only "study" of the day. But I also revised vocab, listened to a podcast, practiced speaking, and used some new flashcards. So yay! Also, I thought I was getting better at listening but omg that tv show was so hard to follow. Maybe because the English subs distracted me, but the characters perhaps also spoke a lot more naturally than people do on podcasts so the words slurred into each other more.

not sure how i felt about episode one of trespasses tbh. it wasn't as good as the book to me, and there was SO MUCH exposition in the dialogue. and i get that its more difficult to explain things subtly in a tv show than a novel, but surely to god they couldve found a better way of doing it

Today I learnt some vocab and did some listening practice. I am soo tired honestly lol I feel like I'm hardly being productive at all...but a wee bit is better than none!
Hey there! Are there any textbooks or other resources you'd recommend for learning Irish?
Ohhh yes yes!I am a fan of the Gaeilge gan Stró book if you’re learning by yourself. HOWEVER, there are three parts. Don’t get the green one for beginners, get the lower intermediate one. That’s because the green one is on Memrise and you can just get the basics from there and then work on the red intermediate one. The blue one is for grammar and it’s super good, too. Also, https://scholar.harvard.edu/natashasumner/publications/bunt%C3%BAs-na-gaeilge-textbook-irish-132-introduction-modern-irish this one, Buntús na Gaeilge, used to be up online for free use, both parts (two, I think), but it’s no longer available. However, I bet if you search for a while, you’ll find it! I am also a fan of the TEG exam resource files where you can practice for language exams. They give you exercise and some more cool things to practice with. And this page: http://www.nualeargais.ie/gnag/gram.htm is honestly the best page ever for grammar. Whenever you need to look something up, you’ll always find it here. If you have more resources, let me know. For me, these are the ones that stuck and that I use the most.
also and by the way NUIG has an open access research repository which has a lot of interesting material in it but is particularly salient for anyone looking for interesting irish language material to read e.g. i just read a really interesting article about immigrant gaeltacht communities in hartford conneticut and im going to crack open another one about irish in ulster from 1920s to 1930s

the key to surviving grad school (also maybe life but definitely grad school) is to pick a side quest every few months or so. something that brings you joy and that you can get better at over time, independent of whether or not your research or classes are going well. put your need for academic validation to use in a non-academic setting and everything will feel less dire and you will learn you are more than your work

Watched a video in Irish with Irish subtitles. Having Irish subtitles was really useful because most Irish videos have English subtitles which isn't always useful. I could actually follow the conversation a little bit which was nice!
I also read and annotated an academic article about systemic sectarianism in Northern Ireland. I don't fully agree with it but the author did make some interesting arguments.
