Tips For When Dental Hygiene Is Hard
On this account we cover how to do things that are "common sense" or otherwise untaught for the people who dont know. Shame-free. Today, we'll be covering some tips and tricks for keeping up with dental health when times get rough.
Often when we begin to struggle, we spend so much time and energy trying to keep ourselves going that hygiene is the first things to slip away. Unlike other hygiene, Dental hygiene is very important and if things start to go awry it can be extremely expensive to fix. Here are some tips to help keep your teeth clean when you feel like its the last thing on your mind.
ββββββββββββ
1) Simplify it - Brushing your teeth can come with so many rules and critiques from dentists that it starts to feel like you shouldnt even do it at all. You're technically supposed to brush twice a day, or even after every meal according to some, and for two minutes at the least.
This isnt realistic for a lot of people who are struggling. To get the energy to get up at least twice a day and perform a boring, often unenjoyable task for two straight minutes can be the last thing you want to do.
The key to this is to simplify it. If you cant brush for 2 minutes, twice a day, then brush for as long as you can whenever you feel like you can. Whether its 3am or 3pm, if the motivation strikes, then do it. A quick once over with a toothbrush will help in the long run, more than you think. You dont even need to use toothpaste. The greatest threat to your teeth is simply the plaque that builds up after eating - and removing plaque only requires some scrubbing with a regular, soft toothbrush.
2) Avoiding deterrents - Some people may hate brushing their teeth because certain parts of it can be unenjoyable. For most, this can be the taste of the toothpaste, especially for neurodivergent people. If its too minty or generally just tastes bad, theres absolutely nothing stopping you from getting a children's toothpaste with a fruity, gentle flavor. Same goes for mouthwash. If you hate the mint, try out bubblegum or berry splash for kids.
Is it the action of getting up and going to do it? Leave a toothbrush by your bed and scrub whenever you have the motivation, or better yet, pick up a bag of some disposable mini toothbrushes. These come with a dollop of toothpaste in the center, requires no water, and is ready to go whenever you need it. Flossers are another easy addition to your nightstand to use whenever the motivation strikes.
Theres two other products that are great for convenient brushing. Disposable finger brushes and tooth tissues. Disposable finger brushes are a unique type of wipes you slip onto your finger and scrub your teeth with. They're great for people with sensitive teeth or sensory issues from toothbrush bristles. Tooth tissues are very similar and are exactly what they sound like. A type of moist towelette often used for children, but theres nothing stopping you from picking up a pack to keep beside your bed, couch, or in your bag.
Miswak is a traditional oral hygiene aid popular in some parts of South Asia and Africa made from the Salvadora persica tree. Its been used for thousands of years and doesnt require toothpaste to clean your teeth. The World Health Organization (WHO) has encouraged people to use Miswaks for their natural health benefits. They contain natural minerals such as chloride, sodium bicarbonate and potassium to help strengthen your enamel and fight plaque and gum disease. They are fully biodegradable and vegan if single use plastics are something you worry about.
One last product you can keep on you is Xylitol gum. Xylitol is a sugar that actually reduces plaque buildup and prevents tooth decay by killing the bacteria in your mouth that causes cavities. You can get the gum in a variety of flavors and pop a tablet in your mouth whenever you see fit.
3) Scheduling - Scheduling can be some peoples worst nightmare. Many people feel like theres only a certain timeslot they can perform an action and if they miss that timeslot, they have to wait for the next. To put it simply, thats not true. As said above, theres nothing stopping you from brushing your teeth whenever you feel like you can.
Another tip is to keep your toothbrush in the shower. When you're in the shower and you see your toothbrush laying there, some find it easier to pick it up and do it then. Its a great tip that can help people who often forget to brush as well.
4) Lastly, make it fun - Brushing your teeth can be a chore, but there are some ways you can make it a little more fun.
Chewable toothpaste tablets might not sound very fun, but Lushs oral hygiene line spices things up with unconventional flavors like cherry-citrus or spicy cola to make brushing fun. They also offer toothpaste in jelly form! While these options may seem redundant, a lot of people find motivation in trying and using up new products they haven't seen before.
Fun apps can give you reminders and motivation to get up and brush your teeth. Pokemon Smile is an app where youre encouraged to brush your teeth to help fight cavities, and at the end you're rewarded with a Pokemon to add to your collection. The app can be a little childish, but the visuals are adorable and the gameplay is rewarding.
ββββββββββββ
Some of these recommendations may seem silly but we encourage you to try some out and see if you notice any difference in your oral habits. Its never too late to start trying to develop a routine and just trying can go a long way.

Drinking Water & Staying Hydrated
On this account we cover how to do things that are "common sense" for the people who dont know. Shame-free. Today, we'll be covering some tips and tricks for drinking more water when you're unmotivated to or simply forget.
If you were to ever find yourself lost in the wilderness, the first thing you would wanna look for ASAP is a source of water. Humans need around 8 glasses (~2L) of water a day that our bodies can function right! It's very important, as dehydration can lead to constipation, kidney stones, overheating, exhaustion and generally a really bad mood!
Water helps to..
β’ keep your joints flexible
β’ regulate your temperature
β’ clean your insides via sweat/urination
β’ digest, salivate, transport nutrients
β’ carrying oxygen to your cells
β’ maintaining electrolyte balance
And much more. We're made up of around 60% water, after all. Though, drinking that much water every day can be a very tiresome chore for many of us, especially those who struggle with executive dysfunction and mental illness. Never fear: we've compiled a big list of little actions you can take that might help you drink a little bit more water in a day. Don't worry if 2 liters of water sounds like a big step! Even a few sips more makes a big difference. Progress is not linear!
ββββββββββββ
1) Switch it up - Water is obviously tasteless and for many people this deters them from staying hydrated when they could opt for something more sweet or exciting like a juice or soda. Luckily, there are dozens of ways to spice up your drinks. Hundreds of artificial flavorings exist; MiO, Sunkist, Starburst and other more affordable off brand water enhancers can transform your drink into something more flavorful. Whether you want something tart like lemonade, savory like iced tea or sweet like fruit punch, there's an enhancer that will fit your taste.
If you would prefer something more natural, there's countless recipes for fruit infused water. Cucumbers, lemon slices and mint can give your water that subtle boost you need to encourage hydration. Below we'll link some recipes if you'd like to try them.
For some people, its not so much the taste, but more so the texture. If you're a soda lover, opt for some sparkling water instead, flavored or unflavored. Brands like LaCroix, Sparkling Ice and Bubly can all give you the same smooth sipping of a soft drink while helping you meet your water quota for the day.
If none of these sound like something you're interested in, you can always opt for making tea instead, hot or iced. If you like cold drinks, you could make a whole pitcher and keep it in your fridge for easy access, whether its chamomile, matcha or plain old Lipton.
2) Make it fun - Making yourself genuinely want to do something is a great way to tackle executive dysfunction. If you're able and open to spending some extra money, buying yourself a fun new water bottle can make you want to use it and carry it with you. Personalization is another way to make a new water bottle even more fun or enhance one you already have. Add dishwasher safe stickers, customized beaded/braided handles and marked timestamps.
A free, more low effort alternative to make drinking water fun is to download an app such as Plant Nanny. Its premise is simple - drink water and in return you water an adorable plant in app. With your help, they'll grow up and you can slowly collect them all. Its a bright, colorful, interactive game that will help you visualize your needs and be rewarded for taking care of them.
3) Eat your water - If the action of drinking is something you struggle with, opt for eating water-rich foods. On top of being a great way to meet your water goals, it comes with more nutrients, vitamins and fiber than regular water while leaving you feeling filled. Below are some fruits and veggies you can snack on that will leave you feeling more hydrated.
Cucumber - 96% water
Celery - 95% water
Spinach - 93% water
Watermelon - 91% water
Cantaloupe - 90% water
And much more!
For something more fun, you can always make some popsicles with coconut water (94% water) and fruit. Pop those in the freezer and have delicious ice pops ready to go in a few hours.
4) Reminders and Encouragement - If you dont have an issue with drinking water but you often forget, a gentle push in the right direction may be all you need. Ask your friends or family for motivation and reminders. You can even challenge them or work towards goals together! Theres nothing better than some friendly competition.
Apps like Waterminder, Waterllama and Habit Tracker can all send reminders to your phone and help you track your progress. If you dont want to download an app, you can always just set some alarms as well. Plant Nanny, as mentioned above, is a fun alternative to this that brings gaming into the picture.
5) Passive Influence - Making some small changes to your routine can make drinking water passively a lot easier. Keep your water bottle on you, carry it from room to room, that way its always easily accessible when you're thirsty.
Switch out your regular snacks for something spicy or salty. Get a bowl of pretzels and a glass of water at the same time and you'll find yourself drinking it with ease. Potato chips, lays, fries or salted nuts are all great options.
If you cant find yourself able to replace your regular beverage with water, challenge yourself to drink a glass of water before you have one. Keep water bottles (plastic or reusable) next to your regular drink in the fridge so you remember to grab both. Another quick way to get some added hydration is adding extra ice to what you usually drink. About 8 cubes is a cup of water!
Always get a glass of water before bed so you have something to sip on, and in case you wake up feeling thirsty. Its a good habit to also get a glass of water right when you wake up. Thats already knocked two glasses out of the way for the day.
Another great idea as a passive, unscheduled reminder, is to drink water every time you use the bathroom. Theres no shame in leaving your water bottle in there as a gentle reminder when you walk in.
ββββββββββββ
Most importantly, more important than drinking 8 glasses of water a day, is to be gentle with yourself. Its okay if you struggle with drinking even one glass a day. Just trying to take small steps in the right direction takes a lot of strength. Try some of these tips out, even if you don't think they'll work for you. Who knows, one might change your relationship with water before you know it!

How To Shower
On this account we cover how to do things that are "common sense" for the people who dont know. Shame-free. Today, we'll be covering how to shower properly. If you look up how to shower, you will get an onslaught of information. "How to shower: Dermatologist approved!' It can be overwhelming the amount of contradictory advice you get from such a simple question. So, heres how to shower. The way pretty much everyone does without all the overthinking involved. ββββββββββββ What you'll need: β’ Body wash, shower gel or bar soap. Any of these work. β’ Shampoo. β’ Conditioner. β’ A loofah or wash cloth. β’ Towel. If you'd like to add more to your shower routine, such as a body scrub or facial cleanser, you can! For now, we'll be covering just the basics. ββββββββββββ The first thing you'll do is turn on your shower. Showers can come in sooo many different models and can be pretty difficult to figure out how to turn on. If you dont know how to turn on your shower, its best to look up a video or instruction online since they can vary so greatly. Here is a short article on how to turn on three different types of commonly used showers. You should adjust the temperature to whatever you're comfortable with. It may take a few moments for your shower to heat up, but every one is different. Run your hand under the water to see if its a comfortable temperature for you before stepping in. Basic shower routines can be done in almost any order. Whether you'd like to wash your hair or body first is up to you. You can take breaks between each task if you lose motivation or need to rest. The only thing that truly matters is that you should use shampoo before you use conditioner. Washing your hair is important because oils, dirt and and dead skin cells can cause your hair to look greasy. If you wash too frequently it may dry out your hair and cause it to overproduce oil. A balance is important but can be hard to find. NOTE: Everyone's scalp and hair type is a different which means there may be some fine tuning when it comes to how often you should wash your hair and how. Many stylists encourage people to wash their hair slightly less frequently than they think they need to. This is because many people wash their hair too often! I will link more resources on how to do properly care for different hair types below. You're going to squeeze a small amount of shampoo into the palm of your hand. For short hair, aim for the size of a nickel.Β For medium-length hair, aim for a quarter.Β If you have long hair, you'll want to use about a half-dollar (a little bigger than a quarter). If you use too much or too little, don't worry, its not a big deal. Shampoo isnt for the shaft of your hair and more so for your scalp. Make sure your hair is wet before you massage it into your scalp. Once youve gotten all over, you'll want to rinse it out of your hair until the water runs clear. After that, you will repeat with conditioner. Conditioner is for all of your hair, but you dont need to rub it into your scalp. Apply all over and wait at least a minute before washing it out until the water runs clear. Thats all for the hair, now lets move onto the body. When washing your body you're going to want to use some sort of loofah or wash cloth because they gently exfoliate your skin. They remove dead skin cells and other build up that just your hands wouldn't be able to do.
This isnt for everyone though, some people with sensitive skin may only be able to use their hands. If one of these tools irritates your skin or cause sensory issues, its okay to skip out on them. If you are using a loofah or wash cloth, put about a nickel sized dollop of body wash/shower gel onto it and rub it together so it creates a lather. You're going to want to go over all exterior parts of your body. Start around your neck and shoulders and work your way down your body, being sure to get parts such as your butt, legs and feet. Avoid using soap on any open wounds and avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth or any other internal parts.
If you have a vulva, never wash with soap as it can cause infections and pH imbalances. Only use gently rinse with warm water and take care to get between all folds. If you have a penis and foreskin, you will want to gently pull back your foreskin and clean with warm water. If you dont, you should still wash the same way. Be thorough, but do not scrub. People with penises are able to use mild, non-fragrance soaps if desired but just warm water is perfectly acceptable as well. Once thoroughly washing your skin all over, you can rinse off all the suds. Thats it! Once you're done with your shower you're going to want to turn it off and step out. Pat down your skin with a towel and avoid aggressive rubbing as the friction can irritate your skin. Different hair types may need to be dried in different ways. For straight hair, gently squeeze the water out with a towel. For curly hair, you may want to use a microfiber towel or t-shirt to scrunch some of the water out. Tutorial will be linked below if you would like to know how in more detail. One last thing! If you used a wash cloth or a loofah you will want to wash it regularly. You can throw a loofah in the washing machine or even your dishwasher to keep it bacteria free. Congratulations! You now know all the ins and outs of showering. Of course, everyone is different and everyone was brought up on how to shower in different ways. If your routine differs, its not necessarily bad. Below there will be some more links provided as mentioned in the tutorial. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask below. ββββββββββββ Other Resources: How often should I wash my curly hair? How often should I wash my straight hair? What is my hair type? Making Showering Easier w/ Executive Dysfunction
On this account we cover how to do things that are "common sense" or generally untaught for the people who dont know. Shame-free. Today, we'll be covering tips to help shower when you struggle with executive dysfunction, a depressive episode or something similar. Executive dysfunction can cause tasks that seem easy and simple for most look insurmountable to people who suffer with it. Sadly, there's no quick fix, but below will be tips on making bathing easier.
Tip 1: Taking away the pressure - A big reason bathing can feel like such a daunting task is because you're looking at the big picture. A list of things you need or feel like you have to do; washing your body, your hair, shaving, going about your regular routine. Simply put, simplify your shower. Gauge what you can manage and cut out the rest. If you can only wash your hair or only wash your body its far better than nothing at all. If you cant do either, just letting the water run over you is enough.
There isnt any hard and fast rules you must follow while showering. You dont have the energy to stand? Then sit. You can invest in a shower stool or just sit right on the floor. "I cant shower, its 3am!" Says who? When motivation strikes, its best to ride that wave no matter what time of day it is. Is the process of getting ready after you shower the daunting part? Pick out comfortable clothes, air dry your hair or even plan to reward yourself afterwards with something you've been wanting to do. Thinking of being able to curl up on the couch comfortable, clean and cozy may strike some motivation.
Tip 2: Make it fun - This tip definitely isnt for everyone, but it may be helpful for some. Try to indulge in some things to make your showers more fun and increase the motivation to do it. Some quick, free things you can do are playing music or even setting your phone or tablet a safe distance away to have your favorite show or movie on in the background. You can even bring a refreshing drink or snack (fruit will never get soggy and you dont need to worry about getting sticky from popsicles!). If you're open to spending some money, there's countless other ways you could increase the motivation to shower. Fancy soaps, body scrubs, fluffy new loofahs, bath bombs or shower steamers can all leave you feeling eager to try them out. Check out the kids section, seriously. Bath tints, bathtub crayons, markers and paint can all be fun for people with a creative side. Tip 3: Dont - If none of these options sound appealing to you, then simply dont shower. There are other ways to freshen up without having to go through all the motions. Using dry shampoo can leave your hair unwashed for longer. Dampen a wash cloth with warm water and wipe down your armpits. Keeping a pack of baby wipes by your bed can help when you feel a spark of motivation. Below will be linked a few more resources and products that could help when you're having trouble. Remember, no matter how hard it may feel right now, things will get easier. What if I got weirder
Common sense, as much as people would like to believe, isn't as common as they think. Common sense is a privilege. Its something taught or performed silently with the expected to be mirrored and easily picked up on. You may have never been taught to load the dishwasher, but from watching your mother do it you know how.
There are many reasons why someone would "lack" such common sense even in adulthood. Negligence from parents to teach their children how to care for themselves as they get older is a form of neglect. On the other hand, neurodivergent people often struggle with the idea of having to "pick up" things naturally. As an autistic person, I need full instruction on how to do something and why it needs to be done that way. I wasn't provided this. Many people werent, and they were left wondering, "Why do I lack common sense?"
The truth is, you dont lack anything other than guidance to help teach what you haven't been taught.
Asking to how to do something that is "common sense" can come with so much shame. With this account, I aim to teach people the things that were neglected or pushed into the corner as they grew up. From how to wash your hair to how to build your first resume, its all important. It'll all be covered. Shame free.

Boass can I go hoame I lack the human spirit
Seeing someoneβs handwriting is weirdly intimate nowadays.
