What does it mean to be Hmong American? // I was tagged by my good friend @yersays to write an answer to this question and take a selfie with it. I've thinking about this for the past week and had a hard time summing up what I think it means to be Hmong American. Our history is filled with persecution and loss, but our parents and grandparents have paved a way for us when they immigrated to the States in the 70's to give us a better life. It's in that knowledge and truth that we continue to seek our freedom in pursuing the opportunities we are blessed with here in America. We have a voice unlike any others. It wasn't until I had a conversation with a friend the other day that I realized how much the Lord had blessed me in the past few months. What I longed for last year had bloomed into something so sweet in the past few months. During my first year at UIC, I rarely felt homesick..but I often felt alone. I yearned for community and people who "got" me. Even though I felt content in doing things on my own, I yearned to share the fun moments with others. I wanted others to experience the excitement that ran through my veins as I stood before William Fitzsimmons or when I ate freshly baked baklava. I didn't mind doing things on my own because it was something I always knew how to do. I felt content in my singleness and understood my worth in the Lord. Even so, I longed to do life with others who shared the same passions as I did. Yes, I had my home church to go back to and so many great friends in Aurora, but I yearned to be surrounded by people my age in the city, doing the same things I loved to do. So, here I am..one year later, totally overjoyed at the community of love and goodness the Lord has poured into my life! I've been having great adventures with new friends and enjoying the sweet conversations with new faces. I am thankful for the community at UIC, CPL Roosevelt Branch, Soul City Church, InterVarsity, and Instagram. It's amazing how the Lord has intertwined the passions in my life and I cannot be more grateful for the community of friends I have been blessed with. ❤️ #socality #blessedmidwest #vscocam

I am seriously blessed to have been able to hang out with these two Canadian lovelies. It's been sooooo cold that we didn't get to do much, but what's better than conversing over food?? I took them to eat yummy tacos at BIG and little's last night and also had some frozen yogurt for dessert. During my break between classes today, we met up at Triple Crown and drooled over dim sum. I am such a bad host and they paid for lunch!! Ahhh, Kou and Kelly also gave me a little gift for taking them out. Seriously the sweetest!! Thank you, Kou and Kelly for lunch and just loving on me. I love how the snowflakes were getting caught in my eyelashes. // And only in Pilsen, you'll have a guy start walking to your pace next to you and say, "Let me sing to you..I want to serenade you"..who then starts going at it, haha.
