when I was writing the Coelacanth-Koutarou connection i ended it with (paraphrasing here) "Basilosaurus never really did have descendants, did it?", obviously I did it it bcs it sounded cool, fitting, and angsty, but thinking about it again...

hey. Minato's daughter, Nagisa. her name takes from her mother Nagiko, doesn't it?

(in the yogyo collab shes also holding one of those types of lollipops, the same one we see Minato get after waking up in Vol 10, but i assume its most likely just a coincidence as it's a very common candy and the fact that this is a collab. maybe a coincidence. honestly? you can never tell with magmell. sugishita used the plastic bag minato and haruno found near the first few volumes as foreshadowing for volume 10)

it's odd. Koutarou's name takes from his father, Kouyou, and as i (again paraphrasing) put it: "continuing kouyou's will" similar to what latimeria (modern day coelacanths) did for miguashaia.

(It should be noted as well that Kouyou's surname before marrying Asumi was Seno, meaning he actively decided to change his surname to Asumi's [Tenjou]. It's seemingly implied that Kouyou has something dwelling in his past as well, something he must have wanted to cover up. however that does have a lot less basis, might revisit in the future if ever we get more information about him)

i wonder if Minato had a say in her name. Nagisa was Nagiko's parting gift, and seeing as it's implied she died during childbirth, i wonder if the rights to naming all crashed onto Minato. i wonder if, in that haze he was in, having lost both his best friend and the love his life, he decided to try and continue Nagiko's will instead of his own, naming his daughter after her. i wonder if he valued his "life" lesser than the people (Kouyou and Nagiko) who deserved it far more than him, so much so that he decided to just. throw himself off board

and because of this decision, Minato's name will not be carried in history, and in its place, Nagiko. just as much as Basilosaurus "never had any descendants"
