Cause to be alarmed

Have you ever noticed that ( FRANCIS BARTON ) from the ( MARVEL UNIVERSE ) looks a lot like ( MILES HEIZER )? But ( HE/THEY ) also goes by ( HAWKEYE ). Having the ability to/of ( EXPERT MARKSMANSHIP & HAND TO HAND COMBAT ) sure makes them a force to be reckoned with. They’re known to be ( RESILIENT ) but also ( SELF DEPRECATING ) and they’re ( 20 ) years old.

      “Deal,” she agreed with a nod. As if getting comfortable for the story they were about to be told, Lucky sat down beside her and looked up at the stranger. Kate was just as eager to hear it, wondering what Clint was going to say when she told him about this strange chance encounter when she saw him later. “Right.” She nodded again so that he knew she was paying attention. “What are they?” The brunette asked, taking a step forward to try and get a better look. “You LARP? Are you a member of the New York City Live Action Role Players?” She asked, wondering if he belonged to the same group that she had met a few years ago. Maybe he knew Missy, Orville, Gilbert, or Wendy.

“Uh, no. I’m actually based up in Ithaca.” Of course there would be a local LARP group, and of course Kate would know about it. “But most of my family is down here, so. What’s left of it, anyway.” Overshare just enough to, hopefully, keep her from prying too deep into that lie. At her question for what the staves were exactly, he grinned in faux excitement. Alright, maybe it’s not completely faked. Pym’s inventions were usually pretty cool. “Ok, that’s the cool part! See, separate, they’re just. Staves. Like this, they’d be more for looks, or deflecting, because they’re really solid, and. Getting hit wouldn’t be fun. But if I bring them together--” He snaps them together, and with a solid twick the two pieces are now one bow, and he kicks the forgotten bola arrow further away. “It’s a bow. Fully functional, too.”

❝ what did you even do to cause this? ❞ … violet raised an eyebrow, looking up at them briefly before looking back at the wound she had been cleaning,  ❝ like, i’m genuinely confused … hand me that please. ❞ she motioned her head slightly towards a container of clean cotton balls sitting up near them.  ❝ … and also concerned, maybe i should’ve started with that. ❞

“Yeah, listen to the kid.” Well kid may have been stretching it, he was probably around her age if not the very same age as well. Nonetheless she had a certain image to abstain as a hero, and calling someone ‘kid’ fit into the gimmick of it all. “Yeah, that’s his arm!” She echoed his statement, only her words held actions behind them. Just as she promised before, she released the arrow. It shot right into the hostage taker’s shoulder. The man let out a rip of noise from his mouth, letting go of his hostage. Speedy sent her second arrow, getting the guy right in the knee where he knelt in pain. “You okay?” She asked him. 

“I’m a grown man?” Even he didn’t sound so sure about that. Either way, as soon as the arrow made contact and the other let go of his arm, he was away, not freezing up like a civilian hostage. Call it self preservation. He wasn’t going to risk being in the way of another shot. Standing up and watching the would be hostage taker go down, he nodded to her. “Yeah, I’m fine. Uh, thanks.” It probably wouldn’t be a good idea to call an arrow up right now, but. “So do you have a plan to keep him from running off, or are we banking on that arrow being enough?”

Victor looked around the place he’d now called home, it was quite the step down from his castle but this seemed to be where the most powerful people seemed to be calling home for the time being so he’d just finished fixing up this sorry excuse of a penthouse into something fitting for the king that he was when he decided he needed to stock up on a food and given the lateness in the day he might as well order take out when he returned from the store. This place was vastly different from his home he thought as he made his way over to the store he was thinking all the things he’d required when he bumped into someone. “Forgive me. My mind was away at the moment, are you alright?” @assemblestarter​

Francis had offered to run to the store this time, figuring since he hadn’t really gone on a run yet it would only be fair. A basic list scribbled almost illegibly down his arm --he’d remembered halfway there he hadn’t written it down, and there were only so many options-- he was rounding the corner, mostly able to dodge other pedestrians as he scribbled down a couple more things. He probably wouldn’t have thought much of it when someone did bump into him, looking up but fully ready to ignore it and go on his way, maybe get berated for not looking where he walked. he was a bit surprised when the other apologized. “Oh, uh, yeah, I’m fine. That was probably my bad, actually.” Getting a good look at the other, he seemed familiar, in a detached way. Like Francis had seen his face somewhere before, but couldn’t place where. He’d definitely never met him, but he’d seen him. “I’m totally all over the place. Almost ran into a couple other people on the way over. Sorry.”

       “Nope.” Kate replied casually, shaking her head. Her eyes moved to the staves in his hands before back to his face. “Are you lost or something?” For someone who wasn’t up to something nefarious, he was acting awfully suspicious. “No, but I noticed you out here on your own crouched over so I wasn’t sure if you were injured or something.” That had been Kate’s initial reason for coming over, but now she was curious. “What are you doing out here with those?” She asked gesturing to the staves.

It’s only now Francis realizes, he knows exactly who this is. Kate. Awesome. Because running into one past Hawkeye isn’t enough. He just has to find them both. Or, they both find him. Semantics. “Oh, uh.” He pauses, an approximation of sheepishness on his face, the lie coming together as he stalls. “If I tell you, you can’t laugh. My best friend is this, like, total tech wiz, right? He made these. They’re pretty cool, actually, they come together, and-- anyway, I’ll start rambling. But, yeah, it’s...for...” What’s something stupid and nerdy and not too dated for this time period? “LARPing. Uh, Fighter-Ranger multiclass.”

“Hey, you know what would be cool? If you’d just be a buddy and let the poor kid go. You’re not the guy in charge here– no offense, so you let your hostage go, you go, and I go talk to your boss and everyone leaves alive.” Speedy, though conversing casually, kept her bow at the ready. “So, what do you say? Make life easier on your face or tell your cellmate the story of how you got shot by an arrow?” / @assemblestarter​

Was there a sign on his back or something? Please involve me in the stupidest things you can think of! There had to be. He was perfectly capable of getting himself out of this mess, but he was trying to keep a mostly low profile here. Beating some thug into submission out in the open wasn’t exactly the best way to do it. Some superhero dork swooping in to save him helped even less. Great. “Uh, I don’t think getting shot sounds too fun, dude. Seriously. Let me go, no harm no fo-- O-kay, ow. That’s my arm. Don’t do that.” God, why was it always the idiots doing the dirty work. “I don’t think he wants to negotiate.”

“If you’re not eating pickles in 2021, just don’t talk to me” Mitchell shook his head, speaking as passionately as somebody might have about something with a little more weight. “Seriously, there are bigger problems in the world. It’s not going to kill you, I promise…It’s really not a big dill” he continued, letting out a deep sigh. “They’re really good, I’m just saying”.

Francis’s nose scrunched in disgust, shaking his head. “It’ll be a cold day in hell anyone will get me to eat pickles. That’s why I have friends who do. How do you just get past how they feel when you bite them? It’s gross.” He wasn’t completely anti-pickle, okay? But biting into one made him want to jump into an active volcano. Exhaling a bit harder at the bad pun, he regarded the other for a moment. “Don’t tell me that was just a set up for that joke. That was terrible.”

It had taken a bit of tweaking, a bit of adjustment, the way it always did when Pym came up with new arrows, but Francis was getting the hang of it. Calling new arrows was getting easier, but it was still a habit to collect the components when he was done. It wasn’t that long ago that leaving anything behind could mean having nothing to work with. Not to mention, he’d always liked working with his hands, liked taking things apart to figure out how they went back together. So now, he’s crouched, disassembling one of the bola arrows --and, Jesus, Pym wasn’t kidding about the perfect restraint, this was tricky-- when he was made aware of another presence approaching. He collapsed the bow into its two pieces, dropping the arrow for now and gripping the staves as he stood. 

“Are you lost or something?” Hiding would be stupid. He’d left too much of a trail, like an idiot. Any half decent tracker could find him. He hadn’t expected anyone else to be out here. Another stupid choice. Never make assumptions. God. And then if it was a civilian, he’d look suspicious as hell running like that. “This isn’t exactly the intended trail.”

“Right, yes, oxygen, and disregarding that very rude comment about my brain.” he said with a sheepish smile. As he gathered himself, he tried to think of the best way to explain it without beginning to ramble again. “Alright so you know how you have to look for your trick arrows after a fight or mission because they might get stuck somewhere or be among debris? Well, what would you say if I found a way to leave that a thing of the past?” he mused, eyes shining with excitement. “So here’s the thing, I kind of repurposed a fabricator, whoops, but anyway what I’m saying is that I’ve been working on ways so your quiver never runs out of arrows. I analyzed zeta and boom tube technology and even spoke to more than a few teleporters and got their insight on this. So your new quiver that I built will have teleportation technology which will always be supplying you with regular arrows and the trick arrows of your choice. It will even send used trick arrows back to the fabricator to make sure they can be of use again. Your new bow is not just a bow but can become a collapsible bow staff that can split off in dual whacky sticks, like the ones mockingbird has been known to use. I’ve made prototypes for three arrows, a scatter arrow, a set that I call the gemini arrows which have attraction and repulsion, and the bola arrow which will once fired and nearing the target will transform into bolas that wrap around their intended target until perfectly restrained. Any questions on anything?”

Francis is almost entirely certain they’ve seen Pym tie his shoelaces around his own finger while trying to tie his shoes before. The fact he can just come up with this sort of stuff, just look at a complex issue and solve it? Wild. They  do their best to keep up, but Pym loses them a bit explaining the tech. When he gets to what it all means the stuff can do, they perk up. “Battle staves.” They correct, softly, like they didn’t even fully think before saying it. They’d trained with them since they were a kid, but had never actually worked them into their arsenal. It was more of a backup, something they could do to never truly be unarmed. Up to this point, their hand to hand training was the only nod to their mother. “Uh, yeah, how do I call specific arrows? Is it a sequence I punch in, or..? And I’m gonna need to see the bow. I’ll have to test the weight against the new arrows.” They couldn’t always follow the intricate details, but there was plenty they could take and run with. This, the parameters and requirements of their bow and each arrow, was well worn territory, at least.

“Francis, Francis, Francis look!” Pym hollered as he pretty much tackled his friend trying to all too excitedly show him his brand new inventions. “Look at what I made, I think I just made a breakthrough.” Pym had been told many times to take calming breaths and to remember to talk slowly otherwise he’d be going a mile a minute explaining things that would go over most people’s heads. “So you know how we had to look for your arrows using that really outdated method? Well anyway, I’ve made you a new quiver and a new bow. I’ve also been working on some prototypes for new arrows that I wanted you to test out.”

Francis’s interest was definitely piqued. When they were younger, it seemed like Pym made breakthroughs every week. But especially in the last few years, if he was showing off to Francis, it was usually something pretty cool. They’d been making basic trick arrows for a long time on their own, but a putty arrow and a smokescreen arrow were small potatoes compared to what Pym could do. Still, they were picky. They might be guilty of placating Pym at times, but when it came to their gear, that went out the window. “First, breathe. You need oxygen to keep that nerd brain running.” They laughed, nodding along as they mostly kept up. “Second. I’m down. Let me see?”

          clint and lucky had been walking through the park when he came across an arrow. and not just any arrow, a trick arrow! it wasn’t one of his and it didn’t look like kate’s so the chance that there was another arrow enthusiast in the city was exciting. so much so that his previous plans were forgotten and he was searching for the owner of said arrow so he could return it ( they were expensive okay? plus, trick arrows were hand made! it’s a struggle! ) and tell them that the tip was too packed which is why it didn’t go off. “it wouldn’t happen to be this would it?” the blonde smiled and held up the arrow
