Note: This song was written around the time 'Outside' was off to mastering. That album being so influenced by Peter Gabriel's 'Security' and 'So', I figured I'd try my hand at 'Us'. A little Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac and the Radio Dept. thrown in. A pretty simple love song about hard times and devotion; nature imagery as usual. Like on 'Outside' I guess the goal lyrically was to find some middle ground between cliche and sincerity; I particularly like the "rap" in the middle full of useless old phrases.Â
If you open up your heart
I know your hope has dried up
And you feel thereâs nothing left
Nature at your beck and call
A stream flowing endlessly to your arms
My devotion is a hurricane
Windswept in the pouring rain
With no control or fear of its direction
Wild cats and birds of prey
The chill of night and the light of day
Deep in the roots, below the trees
And the sand below the seven seas
A painful wind in heavy rain
An endless path on rough terrain
I know this journeyâs got you down but
Youâve almost made it, donât give up now
Hear my voice, feel my touch
Then every branch, every vine
Every doubt in your mind,
Nature at your beck and call
A stream flowing endlessly to your arms
My devotion is a hurricane
Windswept in the pouring rain
With no control or fear of its direction
