Night elf thoughts:

Night elves are only called “night elves” because that is what the other races of Azeroth have come to call them.

Queldorei means “children of noble/high birth” - Highborne, or high elves. Sindorei means “children of blood” - technically Bloodborne (git gud), or blood elves

However, new to Legion (and obviously not even a twinkle in the then-writers’ cold, dead eyes years before during the creation of the night elves we know) are the Nightborne, called the shaldorei, which means “children of the night” - Nightborne, therefore, and…technically “night elves” from a terminology perspective.

So what does that “actually” (not actually, this is just a fun post not canon) make the night elves we know?

Kaldorei is their word for themselves. “Children of the stars” - Starborne, or star elves!

And if you play a night elf and/or like night elves then you are the star because I love night elves good job 10/10

Shalla, which I’m guessing is what they are referring to with Shaldorei, means Shadow, though. It doesn’t mean Night, wouldn’t it be Children of the Shadow?

I’m not sure! Specuatively, Nightborne speak a variant of the elven root language so we don’t know if shalla and shal are two separate words or that shal is just a variant, and whether it means night or shadow for them specifically. It could very well be Shadowborne/shadow elves by technicality, which I think is also a bit of what their design is going for with the kind of DND drow-ish look. A lot or people have just been assuming for now that if shaldorei means Nightborne, then the translation is probably children of the night - could be cleared up later.
