PAST
Celine was born the youngest of the family. While her family wasn’t big, it was happy and she can fondly look back on her childhood with happy memories. Growing up in the heartlands, she was raised with the American Dream in mind that her parents wanted for her and her older brother. From a young age she showed a talent in art. Her parents encouraged her passion and enrolled her in extra art and drawing classes outside of school. Celine started to live a charmed life as she made her way through school. She became popular in school, starring in many productions by the theater department, making the honor roll, and even being crowned Prom Queen.
When it came time to leave for college, Celine got accepted to Purdue University and enrolled in the Interior Design program. She didn’t have the charmed, popular life she had enjoyed in high school, but Celine had been happy and made friends easily. She loved the program and knew that Interior Design was for her. When she graduated, Celine moved back to Indianapolis to join the growing and thriving interior design field in the city. The city was even host to a show highlighting just that on HGTV.
Celine had applied to work on the show, but eventually found work with a large firm in the city. She excelled and made a reputation for herself as a cheery and hardworking woman who was talented at her job. Everything changed when she caught the eye of her boss. It had happened slowly, she moved up and started to lead more projects than assisting on them. One night she was working late on a project of hers and she discovered he was the only other person in the office that night. He ordered takeout for them and broke out some alcohol he kept in his office. One thing led to another and Celine found herself sleeping with her boss that night. He was very charming, her head was fuzzy from the drinks and she melted like putty in his hands while he whispered assurances the whole time in her ear.
It hadn’t turned out to be a one time thing. Though Celine had tried to avoid him after that night and pretend it had never happened, he managed to get her alone to talk and to explain that he was in the middle of a divorce, that he was drawn to her and how his marriage was already over. Soon she started having an affair with her older and married boss. He was married and he told her how miserable he was in his marriage and how they wanted a divorce but she owned some of his company and he said threatened to never let him see their kids again if she didn't get what she wanted in the divorce. He told her that he was in the middle of a battle with their lawyers, but if his wife found out about Celine he’d lose custody of his kids and lose too much of the company. How his wife would use this affair before the papers were signed against him. Celine, like a fool, ate up everything he told her and believed it all. They continued their affair for two years, keeping it a secret she couldn't even tell her best friends. The whole time he kept her updated on the lengthy legal battle and telling her that soon they'd be together in public. How he'd start a proper relationship with her.
One night when she’d been with him, his wife showed up and caught them together. She’d been angry, blaming him and blaming Celine. The blow up had been horrible and she threatened to expose their affair, Celine was going to lose her job, and she'd lose her reputation, her life was going to completely change in the only place she had called home. But nothing was worse than the truth. There had been no talks of divorce. No evil wife threatening to never let him see his kids again and steal the company. No legal process. No divorce at all. As far as his wife knew they were happily married and Celine was the only one to blame for the homewrecking. She felt so stupid, so manipulated and lied to. But she hated herself. Like a fool she had believed him and she was as every bit horrible as her boss’ wife accused her of being.
PRESENT
Celine decided she’d leave Indianapolis behind. She didn’t want to live with the shame of being exposed in this position, and she’d felt used and lied to by her boss when his wife exposed his lies. So she packed up all her belongings, withdrew all her savings and left Indianapolis. She started in Chicago and drove down the United States until she found a town that she liked the vibe of.
Starting over was exactly what Celine needed. The Southern town was cheerful, small enough but big enough to become a nobody in and was beautiful. She quickly found a living situation with a roommate and took up a job as assistant to the mayor while she looked for an interior design job. Leaving so quickly and despised by her boss’ wife, she knew she’d have a hard time getting a good recommendation and they had been her only job since graduating from college. She was going to have to work on either applying for a job without letting anyone contact her old firm, or try to get his wife to not hinder a good review of her work at the company.
