The cold here is brutal and incessant. Bucky feels it down to his bones and then deeper, despite all his efforts to conserve any heat through the night. A wool blanket is pulled tightly around him, and underneath it he still wears his uniform and boots.

On each side of him, other Howling Commandos sleep fitfully, tossing and turning and mumbling in their slumber. It’s beyond crowded in the hastily assembled tent, but even so, body heat does not spread.

Bucky makes some kind of incoherent grunt instead of saying words, because he’s more tired than he thought. It makes Steve chuckle, anyway.

Steve’s almost become accustomed to this—to his shoulders tucked securely under Bucky’s arm as they stumble to their shared apartment through back alleys after Steve had gotten into yet another scuffle.

Almost, because there’s not really a way he can get accustomed to the blood that drips from his face and down onto his clothes or to the constant, pounding ache in the back of his head.

Sometimes, Genji dreams. The first time he’d dreamed post-operation, he’d gone to Dr. Ziegler, and she’d assured him it was normal. (“Your brain is still you, Genji.”) Still, it shocks him. It’s a reminder—whether he’d like one or not—that humanity still clings to his core.

He needs sleep less often now, just because it’s how he’s wired. He’s built to minimize weakness, and the need for hours upon hours of sleep every night would surely qualify as one.
