Layla smiled softly, moving to the kitchen to boil the kettle. She remained quiet as she prepared tea for the both of them, watching as her motherâs gaze drifted. She often wondered what she was seeing when her eyes shifted like that, but she was long past questioning her on it. It never got her anywhere and Layla had given up trying to get her to get help. She loved her mother, but it was exhausting. âCouldnât sleep.â She shrugged as she stirred the tea. It was sort of true⌠Mostly, she had heard her mother getting up, but with it coming up to the four year anniversary of them finding Hannah, not to mention hearing about Austin knocking someone up⌠It was a lot. She missed Hannah. She missed her dad. And she missed having someone. âThis town is just crazy, you know? Hard to sleep sometimes.â She slid the cup over to her mum.
Cecilia wished that David hadnât left and sometimes she wanted to give in and call him at his brotherâs place but she knew she was being silly. They hadnât gotten through it together like some couples seemed to and Ceci felt like sheâd failed in some way. Failed the girls, even though one was gone, and failed her husband. She looked back at Layla, wondering if something had been keeping her up but she didnât push. Maybe she should. âYeah, well.. I can definitely agree with you there.â She sighed, gently picking up the cup and having a little sip. She sighed. âI donât think Iâm going to be able to go back to sleep now at all...â
l-aylaclarksonâ:
Layla released a short breath, scoffing at the idea that any of this was âalrightâ. She shook her head as she turned back into the house, satisfied that her mother was following her. She didnât want to be mad at her- to some degree she understood that losing Hannah had affected her terribly and she needed help with that, but Layla lost Hannah too. And then her father. And perhaps soon her mother. Layla waited for her mum to be back inside the house before she closed and locked the door, sighing in a further attempt to let go of how she felt. âDo you want a cup of tea?â Her tone was softer as she grabbed her mumâs slippers and handed them to her.
Cecilia smiled lightly. She felt like such a burden, she shouldnât be worrying her daughter like this, not after everything. She just didnât know what was wrong with her sometimes, everything was so... dark and confusing. âYeah... yeah, that sounds nice, love.. Thank you.â Ceci smiled again, trying to act like she hadnât just been sleepwalking out into the middle of the freaking street. Should she go to a doctor? Her gaze drifted towards the corner of the room, feeling like Hannah was standing there. She turned her eyes away again, back to her youngest. âWhat are you doing up anyway?â

She returned the smile and looked back at the house. â Well I saw everyone else put theirs up in the neighbourhood, thought I do the same too. So I wouldnât be the one who didnât have them up.â
âWell, it looks lovely... brings the rest of the street together in a way.â

âUgh, I hate having lights that are lingering down.â She mentioned after taking a few steps back from her porch. â I mean I know theyâre going up late, but better late than never, right?â @secretsummerstartersâ
âYes, definitely better late than never.â Ceci smiled, standing back to look at the other womanâs handiwork. âI really love seeing everyoneâs decorations this time of year.â

âMum!â Layla yelled at her mother as she walked out on to the road, but nothing seemed to be getting her attention. She wrapped her arms around herself, wishing she had thrown a housecoat on before chasing after her. Half irritated and half worried, Layla stepped outside, the cold concrete of her garden path biting at her bare feet. âMum, get off the road!â When she turned and laughed, Layla breathed a sigh of relief, but it was clear that she was still annoyed. âCome on, Mum, itâs 4amâŚâ
Cecilia suddenly realised that she was cold. Freezing in fact. Glancing down at the road as she started towards her daughter, she realised she didnât have any shoes on. This was starting to get out of hand but what could she do? âIâm alright, itâs alright...â She muttered, folding her arms around herself. What she really wanted to say was darling, Iâm so sorry but the words stuck in her throat until they were there too long for them to mean anything. What a wreck Layla had ended up with as a mother. âLetâs get you back inside before you freeze, come on...â

Cecilia blinked and came back to herself. Sleepwalking. Again. Though the realisation came slowly. She was standing in the middle of the road in the darkness - was it night or morning? She couldnât tell. Where was she? Turning, she looked over her shoulder to try and get her bearings, and thatâs when she realised she wasnât alone and jumped. âOh--!â She did her best to laugh it off.

âItâs like I canât even breathe anymore. This town is a curse.â
â Background
Ceci was born and raised in Baberton. She was swept off her feet by her husband David when she was only sixteen. They dated for two years and, when high school ended, the two then went their separate ways. Breaking up after a fight about David going off to London for university and how a long distance relationship would work. Cecilia was pretty heartbroken but she found a way to distract herself by getting a job in a local clothing store. Sheâd always loved fashion and followed it pretty religiously. Having something to focus on took away the sting, just, and she found a way to keep going. Her friends helped too. She had a lot of friends around town as Ceci had always been a very popular girl. When David came back home to Baberton a few of years later, it was almost as if no time had passed between them at all. Seeing him in person (they ran into each other in a coffee shop) knocked the breath out of her. They caught up, staying in that cafe until closing, and then they went to a bar for a couple of drinks. Two turned into five and five turned into six and the two shared a passionate night at a nearby hotel. A night which brought their first daughter Hannah into the world, and brought the two of them crashing back together.
Cecilia has been a housewife the past few years. She quit her job to raise her two children Hannah and Layla, something she never regretted even a little bit. She loved her girls, who were always very different from each other. Layla was more like her father and Hannah was a bit more like Ceci, though⌠more high maintenance. And spoiled. They definitely spoiled her but Ceci and David adored her regardless. Cecilia was perhaps a little too lax with the rules when it came to Hannah, should maybe have been a bit harder on her, but Hannah had a way of wrapping her around her little finger with just a look or a pout.
When Hannah disappeared and then her body turned up in the woods next to Sarah Clarkeâs (in an apparent murder/suicide) the Clarkson family was shaken to its core. Ceci fell apart, as did David, but they did so in different ways. It also tore them apart and the two are currently going separated, probably heading for divorce. David has moved in with his brother in Bridgefield, who moved to the neighbouring town years ago, and Ceci feels alone in that big house now. She also has come to the conclusion she needs to go back to work so she can take care of herself now David isnât around to do it for her anymore. The loss of a child is a terrible burden to bear and they just didnât get through it together like Ceci hoped they could⌠and she isnât sure how to be there for Layla but she tries her best. Sheâs terrified that something will happen to her remaining daughter due to the serial killer plaguing town and she isnât sure she could ever survive that. Sheâs not even sure how sheâs managing to survive this as it is.
â Back to Baberton
Ceci has been very strongly against Sarah Clarke getting any sort of recognition or memorial in town because she believes that she really did kill Hannah and doesnât deserve it. She even had a massive argument and falling out with the Clarke parents when they wanted Hannahâs memorial service to include Sarah somehow and has been quietly raging ever since. She got it into her head that she had to do everything she could to get Sarah Clarkeâs name pushed down into the dirt. She doesnât deserve mourners or anything else. She murdered her daughter and Ceci decided she was going to do everything in her power to drive the Clarkeâs out of town if she had to. She canât bear to look at any of them anymore, all she sees is Sarah and then Hannah, and it drives her mad. Anger is much easier than grief so she channels it all into this.
Problem is, it all came out that Sarah didnât kill Hannah after all when a video was released that apparently showed Kelly Sharpe killing Hannah instead. Ceci didnât really know how to feel when she heard the rumours. What about Sarah then? The suicide note she left confessing? Then the biggest bombshell of all was dropped⌠Sarah Clarke was alive. Sheâd come back, escaped captivity, her whole death had been staged⌠but Ceci canât let go of the anger. Sheâs sick of mind games and how is it fair that Sarah gets to come back but Hannah doesnât? She still doesnât want Sarah in town and she holds a lot of anger and resentment despite the proof now that Sarah didnât do anything to her daughter and was also a victim. Her anger also transfers over to the Sharpe family, and she feels intense stress on a near constant basis⌠which isnât helped by her frequent sleepwalking episodes that started up shortly after David left.
â Whatâs Her Secret?
She used to steal a couple of pills from her friend Lydia Bakerâs handbag. The pills were super strong painkillers and Cecilia found that some days it dulled the emotional pain she was feeling too. Lydia lent her one freely one day for a headache and since then Ceci took to stealing them out of Lydiaâs bag when the other woman was in the bathroom or something. She never wanted to become one of those addicted housewives, drowning their sorrows and grief in pills and booze (akin to the way Cynthia Hart presents herself these days) but sheâs afraid thatâs the road sheâs going to end up going down. She doesnât know if she has the strength to pull herself back from the edge or not. Not after losing Hannah like that. Then Lydia died in a tragic accident and Ceci doesnât have her crutch anymore.
When she was younger, Ceci had an imaginary friend called Gretel. Her father was always furious about it and thought she was being ridiculous but her imaginary friend was due to her intense loneliness (her family wasnât always the happiest). Gretel went away when she was a little older but, over the past while, Ceci has strangely started speaking to her imaginary friend again. Not all the time and mostly at night. She isnât sure why or what to do about it, and itâs painfully embarrassing especially at her age, but sheâs so caught up in grief and, again, loneliness especially now David is gone⌠it feels like Gretel is all she has other than Layla, who she wishes would spend more time with her.
Has been âseeingâ and âfeelingâ Hannahâs spirit or ghost, whatever you want to call it, around the house. Itâs gotten stronger since her death and Ceci misses her so much, sheâll sometimes speak to her like she does to Gretel. Cecilia does sometimes wonder if sheâs going crazy or suffering some un-diagnosed mental disorder (she did have a grandmother with schizophrenia), but it brings her a little comfort and if itâs not hurting anybody, why should she try to stop it?
