On the other hand, I think SuFin have a similar dynamic (used only Swedish for centuries, then Sweden tried to learn Finnish), but Finland is way more supportive of Sweden's attempt on seitching languages. However, Sweden's Finnish is still quite bad (he's not good with languages). Finland sometimes pretends not to speak Swedish just to make him use Finnish. They also use English a lot, mostly with Sealand.

For RoBul it's kind of more complicated. They probably met speaking either Turkish (??) or Church Slavonic (???) or some other lingua franca neither of them really liked. Later on, they probably spoke Russian to one another, until Romania got fed up and learnt Bulgarian (I think he IS good with languages, couldn't have taken him more than 6 years). Bulgaria has absolutely no knowledge of Romanian outside really mundane and everyday things, but he'd like to learn at some point probably.

I'm so happy that I got to participate in the @hetalia-20-anniversary-zine !! And especially with a piece about my favourite ever, Lithuania!

It's a personal piece under the "character love" cathegory, which I spent soooo long thinking about and making. I was going for a Uekura Eku kinda illystration, with Liet floating amongst various things that represent him to me. The name is "LietTime" because that's what I think every time he spawns in my creative process.

I'd like to share a bit of my "hetalian road" or my experience with hetalia, since it's such a huge deal in my life.

I found hetalia in 2018, when I was at a still preteen age, mind you. I don't consider myself a veteran, obviously, but I did get the experience of being a part of the old fandom (sort of) as a 12 year old who knew no better, and watching it transform alongside me, as I also shaped my fandom experience to my liking. There were some things I openly disliked from the beginning, but others I got to normalize and then reflect on them to ultimately forsake them in my interactions with the fandom. It's not propaganda, I just matured. And I did it with Hetalia as a constant source of knowledge, not on history or politics (which, as we all know, need to be watched through a certain lense), but on fandom behaviour, etiquette and practices. It's safe to say it is the fandom I have interacted with the most (if not the only fandom I have interacted with fully). Here I built, I wouldn't say a career, but something. I have given art to people who love the same thing as I do, and they have given me their joy back, and that's just precious.

On the other hand, I don't think I would have ever choosen the professional path I have if it weren't for Hetalia. Put in a simple way, Hetalia made me interested in history, which made me interested in geography, which made me interested in languages, which made me interested in linguistics. There's other things, of course, but Hetalia set my course, and I wouldn't take it any other way.

I'm not saying Hetalia is a wonderful show because it clearly isn't. There's a lot to unpack and there's already a pile of video essays saying it sucks and that it should be vanished. But it's not often considered that some people have also gotten positive experiences from it. I don't regret watching Hetalia and engaging with the fandom. I still rewatch it sometimes (the sub, the dub isn't canon to me lol), and have a laugh while acknowledging that it's a flawed work made in a different time by a person by no means qualified. And still, it's such a big thing, a cultural phennomenon and, especially, a lifemark for me, that I just can't hate it.

On July 6th, 2006, the very first Hetalia strip was posted to Hima’s blog. Now, 20 years later, the fanbase is still going strong, creating every beautiful fanworks showcasing out love for this series. With 180 pages of content, Draw a Circle, That’s Hetalia! aims to showcase and and Celebrate not just Hetalia itself, but also this amazing fanbase that has grown around it. Here’s to another 20 years!
