The heat was pleasantly warm, to start.
So much so, in fact, that it was taking all their energy possible in order to stay awake. It felt like a warm summer day, or a room filled with a small fire to keep warm on a cold, blistering winter. The latter was in fact probably closer to the truth---as they found themself gently eyeing the small fire encroaching on their space. Stepping away slightly, they clicked their tongue before turning back to the shelves in front of them, brow knitting together.
There was so much to take in here. And so little time to do it.
Sighing gently, they quickly removed their overcoat and scarf, tossing them to the side. It didnât matter to them if the clothing became fire to the flames. All that mattered right now was to get to work on this collection, and the extra weight and heat would simply drag them down. Unbuttoning and rolling up their sleeves, they set to work, grabbing book after book off the shelves to scan over the title briefly before adding them to the pile in their arms. When the weight was becoming too great, they moved to one of the tables, dropping the stack down and going back to gather another. They did this only twice more, not wanting to push their luck, eyes continuously flitting over to the ever growing flames.Â
Once their pile of books was accumulated, they sat down and got to work, untying the small bun in their hair to instead quickly pull back all of their hair into one larger, sloppier bun. Flipping open the first book, they simply scanned through the first few pages before skipping further ahead. This wasn't the time to become engrossed in one subject---though goddess knew they wanted to. All this information, on just about anything they could imagine.
The amount of knowledge they could possibly gain from one book was likely more than they would accumulate within a lifetime.Â
That made this all the more important to skim as much as they could. Blanks could be filled in later when they were thinking on it. Right now, they had to keep an eye on the flames that were slowly encroaching, all while flipping through the pages of these books. They'd try to grab what ones they didn't finish and take them out with them---if that was even possible. They hoped it was.
Everything burning to the ground with only what knowledge they could fit in their head hardly seemed fair.
Thinking on that was wasting precious time, though. Attention back to the book, they skimmed through a few more chapters before shutting it and moving on to the next one. This continued on for a bit, opening one book, skimming it quickly, then tossing it aside to grab onto another one. Rest assured none of these had any information that was really grabbing at them, that was enough to suck them in and ignore the growing heat of flames around them.
Which, really, at this point was getting much harder to ignore.
If they were keeping track of the time correctly, they would place it around the thirty minute mark. A good chunk of time passed, and enough for the flames to have grown immensely in size. They could feel the sweat building on their face, and the uncomfortable heat all around them. Still, they persisted, determined to get what they could from this endeavour. After all, while what they'd discarded so far wasn't not interesting, there had to be something that was really worth it. Something that they were willing to risk their life over to take away from this burning place.
But they just weren't finding it.
Nothing was truly standing out. Well, actually all of it was, since it was information that they so desired, but none of it enough to make it impossible to tear away from. Though there were some close calls---particularly a book on technological advancements that if used correctly, could help with their crest research. Theyâd set that one aside closer to them, so that they would remember to grab it along with anything else that particularly got their interest when it came time to run.Â
Thumbing through another book, they took pause upon coming across a section in it. Despite being informed this place had anything they could have ever wish to research, they hadn't expected to come across information that regarded home. Crest research had little to go off of as it was, but this seemed to go a bit further in depth. Flipping through a few more pages, they shut the book and stacked it on top of the other one they had chosen to keep. The two would work in tandem, that was certain.
Hand moving back to the pile, they withdrew it just as quick as it had gone back over. The flames were already upon the desk they were at. Giving out a 'tsk', they grabbed the two books they'd set aside and got moving.
Pulling off their vest, they held it up to their face in order to cover their mouth and nose, hoping to block out as much of the smoke as possible. Clutching the books to their chest, they navigated through the library best they could. It was much⌠bigger than they had realized. Unsurprising due to the amount of knowledge it was supposed to contain, but it became like a maze to get out.
Passing through the rows of shelves, fire kept blocking the ends. Maybe they had waited just a bit too long to leave. Eventually though, they spotted the exit and was able to make it out---just narrowly escaping the flames taking over.
"Well," they huffed out, after taking a moment to cough out the smoke that got in their lungs. "Next time I'll be sure not to take my time in a dangerous situation such as thatâŚ" Especially since taking time was what got them stuck here in the first placeâŚ
Collecting themself proper, they sat themselves down on the floor, flipping back open to the books they'd grabbed. There was no telling when they'd have to relinquish them again, so it was best to start pouring over both of them now.
Perhaps they hadn't truly learned anything after all.
