I remember when I was younger, anytime I watched a movie where the characters have to kill a scary monster/alien, I always thought the act of killing it was intended to be part of the horror. Like there’s this amazing creature that we’ve never seen before, and maybe under different circumstances we could’ve coexisted with it, but it’s trying to attack you and you have to defend yourself, but by destroying it you also destroy the ability to ever understand it and that’s sad and is supposed to make you feel conflicted.

It was not until well into my adulthood that I realized most people do not have complicated feelings about movies where people have to kill a scary alien monster, nor is that necessarily meant to be part of the narrative (unless it very obviously is). They just want the scary thing to die because it’s scary. I don’t have a real conclusion to this I just started thinking about it for some reason.

Why do people think that the one wish willow in Obsession is like a monkey paw? It’s not. Bear did not just ask for Nikki to like him back. He specifically said more than anyone in the world. “Nikki” (post-wish Nikki) shooting Ian was not a consequence of his wish. It was because in her eyes he was interfering.

In no way was I defending Bear with what I said about his wish by the way. He’s completely horrible. “What’s so bad about being with me?” In response to the woman he stripped of her autonomy BEGGING him to kill her. He’s disgusting.

This moment in the scene of Obsession is so important to me because it uses the shadows as a staple for Entity! Nikki when she flips from doing well (in Bear’s eyes) and getting positive feedback on her acting to not being able to pretend to be her anymore. Her face, while subtly, gains more shadow as she turns away from the lights as Entity Nikki has an outburst from Bear not complying and pretending everything is okay. Which is also an important note on how Entity! Nikki is just as much of a reflection of Bear as she is a copied frame of Nikki. Bear constantly spends the film telling Entity Nikki to comply and act accordingly. The problem is that the way he wants her to act goes against the wish he made so she can’t.

I just realized the voice distortion when Entity Nikki is yelling is like the sound box from the wishing willow box

I think a massive part of the story and that Entity Nikki exists alongside Nikki still being there and suffering is because Nikki already told Bear no. The wish Bear makes doesn’t just force Nikki to develop feelings, it actively overrides her own consent. This is such an important part about why Nikki still pops out and has room to come back because Nikki doesn’t want any of this. She isn’t just Bear’s friend who happens to not be in love with him and Bear foolishly wishes she’d develop the same feelings. She doesn’t LIKE Bear, she’s seen his feelings, she’s had time with other people, she’s had time to “see his appeal”, she actively tells him she doesn’t like anyone, she lets others know she sees him as a brother. She can’t be convinced!!! She made her decision! She doesn’t WANT him and she isn’t gonna change her mind! That’s why Entity!Nikki exists apart from regular Nikki who fights back against this all. Most narratives of a wish like this wouldn’t have scenes of Nikki fighting back and being horrified because they’d frame Bear as the victim. Obsession switches the roles because even the entity that takes over Nikki isn’t inherently bad or a divine punishment for his greed. It’s an active response to Bear saying no doesn’t mean no to me. The crack between them that allows Nikki to reappear from Entity Nikki is because Entity Nikki fundamentally can’t be her. Being Nikki means not liking Bear otherwise Nikki would’ve been something like “hey… do you wanna go on a date?” The wish couldn’t change Nikki and Bear didn’t wish for her to grow feelings for him he wished for [Nikki] to [love him more than anyone else in the world]. Nikki can’t do that! So Entity Nikki forms as a response
