Wow, this was a nice surprise to stumble upon while lazily scrolling through Tumblr at an hour when I should probably be sleeping instead! Ā Iād love to play in Stockholm (and then stock up on Swedish folk albumsā¦that stuff is amazing). Ā Iām still in contact with most of the people from the band, so thereās a chance we could get back together sometime in the future. Ā Now I just need to find a wealthy patron who can fly us to Swedenā¦

Jack and Misty have entertained the masses since the sixties. Lets give back as they are in need of help to handle an unexpected relocation expense.
These retired musicians are about to lose their home: the land their mobile home is parked on was sold, and theyāre too broke to relocate. They have less than a month before the whole place is bulldozed. Thereās only 4 days left in the campaign and theyāre not even halfway to their goalā¦please, if you can spare a little, help out Misty and Jack.
CHE is pretty much on permanent hiatus at this point. Ā I'm still writing songs, though, and I made really rough demos of a bunch of them. Ā Check them out and feel free to download and share.

Here's a rough rehearsal recording of "From the Odessa Jail." Ā The band at this time was Roderick Cumming - guitar; Grant Lovelace - electric bass; Spencer Savage - drums; Andrew Duncan - trumpet; Julie Carpenter - violin; Leah Harmon - accordion.
Here's the demo that eventually turned into the song "Me and the Rats." Ā I came up with a bunch of chords and Clint wrote a lovely through-composed melody. Ā After I wrote lyrics and a new melody, Clint's part became the guitar solo. Ā And it was sped up ridiculously. Ā Check out how well he coped with my a-hole move:

Been listening to Spiers & Boden for the last few days -Ā SongsĀ andĀ Vagabond. Ā Both are excellent albums. Ā I always complain about how most modern folk bands get all of their rhythmic cues from rock music (and shitty rock music, at that), so it's great to hear these guys play with a different sensibility. Ā The stomping and the way the melodeon is played really propel the music. Ā Instead of making the music sound simpler, it opens things up for more interesting and complex arrangements. Ā Or maybe they just play the way I want to hear this stuff played.
Here's an old live version of "Napoleon of Regret" recorded at Bordello. Ā The band for this show was as follows:

It was Ego's idea to play the song in the style of The Specials' "Ghost Town."
Just saw a great Stephen Sondheim quote: āThere will always be a public for the past. The problem is to attract one for the future.ā As a writer of music inspired by older styles, I sometimes need to remind myself that Iām alive now, not then, and that my obligation is to me and the present, not to the musicians who came before me. I think āgetting it wrongā is a virtue.
