While I love Redhood for his own qualities, the way he challenges Bruce is so dear to me.

Yes, Batman took a "hyppocratic oath" and prioritizes the safety of his "patients" beyond anything else, but there's also a detachment that Bruce gains from this. While his no-kill rule comes with its own hardships, in the end, Bruce forces other people to fill in for him. Most people come to understand that Bruce's morals are inseparable from his identity because of his parents' murder, which creates this sense of responsibility in the people who care about him.

Nobody under Batman's wing enjoys killing, but Bruce's inaction encourages the idea of "he won't do it because his trauma makes him incapable, so I have to." Jason's self esteem is fractured because he was hurt to the highest degree, and when Bruce faces two choices, he decides to save Jason's abuser. I appreciate the depth most comics give to him in the initial years after his resurrection, but I enjoy their dynamic the most when it's been a while, they're on decent terms, in contact with each other, and Jason still kills. I love the idea that Jason idolizes Bruce (to a lesser extent than as Robin) and feels he has to kill, not only to make sure no more lives are lost, but also to preserve Batman's identity and reputation, allowing Bruce to stay "clean" while he dirties his own hands.

My favorite interpretation is that the rule isn't some deeply engraved, subconscious value of Bruce's, but a deliberate choice he has to make every single night, and each time he chooses not to kill a dangerous person, he hands that decision off to someone else.
