So this part is really good contemporary characterization for Columbo. Pinball was seen as a corrupting influence, and was banned in cities like New York and Los Angeles until the mid to late 70s. When this episode aired, pinball had been legalized in LA for only 4 years, and I feel that it’s supposed to reflect on both the murderer and Columbo here -- that the murderer has pinball machines (and you know, being part of an IRA/IRA-sympathetic group I guess helps) and that Columbo is clearly familiar with the nuances of how to play pinball at an advanced level, reveals a lot about their character. We know that Columbo was a delinquent when he was a kid, so it’s not at all surprising that he knows how to play like this.
