Nina studied her. There was something relentless in her features- the cheekbones sharp, the nose rigorously straight. Only the full thrust of her lips gave any hint of softness. It was a challenging face, stubborn in its lines. Beautiful.
Nina would have liked to tell Hanne that she could stroll into Os Alta, all six feet of her, with her chestnut-dipped-in-strawberry-syrup hair and her copper-coin, and a thousand Ravkan courtiers would write songs to her beauty. Nina might be the first.
Hanne’s copper eyes looked like vivid sparks against her cheeks, but Nina knew from experience that You’re beautiful when you’re angry was never a great place to start.
Nina brushed her tears away and squeezed Hanne’s hand, felt the warm press of her palm, the calluses of her fingers. Hands that could sew. String a bow. Soothe a sick child. It felt good to take this small bit of comfort-even if it also felt like she was stealing. “I’m glad I met you, Hanne,” Nina said.
Hanne propped herself up in bed, shoving a pillow behind her back. She’d left her hair unbraided in a rosy brown tumble around her shoulders, and Nina had the urge to twine one of the thick curls around her finger.
Hanne looked back at the mirror, blinking her tears away. “The lips are still too full.”
“Leave the lips,” said Nina sharply, then rose to hide her blush. “They’re just right.”
“He’s my father,” said Hanne, her eyes full of that fierce determination Nina loved so much. “I won’t leave him.”
As soon as his back was turned, Hanne winked at Nina, her gaze snapping fire.
Nina slid her hand into Hanne’s as they followed Ylva and Jarl Brum into dinner.
They would build a new world together.
But first they had to burn the old one down.
