Castle Fanfic Stream Convention

Hey there - yes as with the past two cons, there will be a timetable that lists who will be on at what time. This list will be made available probably a week before the stream.  

When I said to have this one a little more organic I only meant it in the way that if a friend of this particular writer wanted to join in on their panel, they can just call in and do so instead of having to wait for a free spot to open up.

I know it’s been a while (my bad!) but I’m here and alive yay! 

There have been some of you who have expressed interest about having another stream con and I hear you! So here’s what I’m proposing - 

One last stream con because I’m aware the fandom is becoming more and more quiet these days, with fic writers slowly dwindling in numbers. So one last stream con BUT instead of the structured format we’ve had the last two times, lets do a 24 hour non-stop stream? 

Think of it as a radio show maybe, with people calling in/video calling in whenever they want to join in a particular discussion. Just a constant stream of people talking about things they love, without a set topic or any restrictions (within reason) because after all it is the last one. 

We can call it the Stream Con: Chaos Edition. 

That’s not to say it’s going to be completely disorganised, because I think that would annoy me to no end. But just less structured and more ... organic, in the way the stream is run. 

I think this will have to be held in either August or September (I’ll have a poll) because unfortunately it is tax season here and I just won’t have time before then to do the necessary set up etc. 

In any case, it’s still early days, and I’m happy to take suggestions and ideas either here on Tumblr, or Twitter (@castleficstream) or email ([email protected]).

So that’s that, folks! 

Two weekends, 56 hours of panels and 30+ authors later, we are done!! I know I’ve said it countless times already but man, the response and support that I have received for this event have been mind blowing. 

A huge thank you to everyone who participated, even if you were just popping in and out of chat. I’m so glad people have enjoyed the stream and hopefully some of you have been inspired by the authors who have taken their time to share their knowledge and experiences with the rest of us. 

If even one person has been motivated to start/continue writing because of this stream, then hey that’s all I could ever ask for. And I hope along the way, we’ve all made some new friends.

A couple of projects/ideas were discussed in the group therapy panel today and these were the Castle Fic Mentoring thingo and the Castle Nanowrimo in January one (which name I cannot remember right now). I’m sure more details will come soon about these so hang tight!

Hello everyone! There have been some minor changes to the stream schedule for this weekend, so I thought I’d upload a revised version. 

The only changes are a the last minute additions of @daphnebeauty (GASP!!!) at 11pm EST on Friday and Sandiane Carter at 11am EST on Saturday.

Hey there! Haha yes, I know a lot of people were requesting this at one point during the weekend, but right now, it’s not something I’m comfortable with. 

Firstly, I have zero control over who watches the stream and there may be underaged viewers watching. Smut generally is a subject for those over the age of 18, and while of course I’m not saying underaged people absolutely cannot talk/watch/write about smut, but in the event that they stumbled upon the stream, and into the conversation, I do not want to be responsible to have had exposed them to material that wasn’t suitable for their ears. 

Secondly, for a stream that is made publicly available, and not having the ability to ‘rate’ it, the best option is to make sure all the content is suitable for all ages. As best as I can anyway. 

Smut is also an incredibly personal and intimate subject for a lot of people and I think, and I may be wrong here, but the idea of discussing this in public, to a bunch of relatively unknown people, as well as people who may be lurking anonymously on the stream might not be the most comfortable talk about/listen to. 

So tl;dr. no I will not be having a smut panel any time soon. However, if you want, and if you can gather a bunch of like-minded individuals to have your own ‘smut con’, I’m happy to go through the technical side/logistics of holding your own con? 

Okay. 

I hear you. I know it’s pretty inconvenient to hit a link and have it lead to something you don’t want to see. I get it, and I’m sorry. But hear me out. 

When the stream ends (after 14+ hours of constant, uninterrupted uptime), a 14 hour raw video is archived on Twitch. I then have to go into the 14 hour video and split each panel out one by one, according to what time they were on. 

This means going through 14 hours of video, taking down the time a panel was on, for example: 1:05:26 - 2:00.36 for panel #2 and then splitting it out. Then I get into Twitch and enter each time segment to split said video out, and add descriptions, check for audio etc. Then I get on Tumblr and have to link each of these videos on the post. 

This is done straight after the stream ends, which means I’ve been awake from about 12am to 4pm that day. This includes being alert for potential technical problems that may come up, monitoring the load on my server for the stream so that it doesn’t go offline and get cut off, making sure panelists are connected to the stream on time on top of having to be alert and present to moderate most of the panels that day.

Over the entire course of the 48 hours this weekend, I managed about 4.5 hours of sleep. So safe to say, when I post the links/split the videos, I’m not working at 100%. 

Of course, that’s not excuse - I did this voluntarily and this was entirely my own choice and the lack of sleep etc. is pretty much of my own doing. And when something goes wrong with the links or whatever else, I take full responsibility. That doesn’t mean though, that I appreciate you coming in here and telling me that I should have gotten it right the first time. 

I want to get it right the first time too - only sometimes I don’t. It’s not on purpose. Sometimes I mess up. I fix these mistakes as soon as I can after I find out about them. In today’s case, I was alerted on Twitter and fixed it while I was at work. I do my best - and sometimes it’s not enough but you gotta bear with me here. I’m only one person. 

So for future reference, while I appreciate you wanting to catch up and watch these panels, can you please be nice about the mistakes you come by?

So glad you’re loving it! It’s been a lot of fun for me too :) And yeah, maybe a bit too early to ask oops :P 

It takes quite a bit of time to organise and with only three months left to the end of the year, unfortunately you may actually have to wait to 2017. Sorry! 

I mean, to be honest, I’m not sure it will be as effective if it’s held too often? Idk haha. And also it takes a lot out of me running this - I stay up almost the whole 48 hours to moderate/participate/monitor the hardware/software to stream so I need a lot of recovery time hahaha.
