Kinda Analysis? Idk. Just my thoughts on Maya and Scarecrow's bond.
Not really coherent but meh.
Analysis of The Strangers
Killers seem to have a deep emotional bond.
Despite it, the desire to batter her body was present and Gregory (Scarecrow) acted on it.
The high he gets is part sexual but he acts on it through spilling blood, not sexual assault. He seems to enjoy that more.
He has feelings for the mask. The persona.
And any substitute who enjoys bloodshed and wears it seems to do it for him.
His interest in Maya seems to stem from her being his only surviving victim. His actions as “Gregory” during their meeting suggest a desire to force a bond (a bond only he sees). He focuses on what he feels, most curious about how she felt as he killed her lover and stabbed her.
Maya’s curious looks towards his tattoo show that she knows who he is. She can feel it.
So when she explains superficially, he got it in his teens and she fakes a “that’s cool” reaction, he isn’t happy. He wants her to never shake off his control. The mere fact she tried irritated him.
After she kills his lover, he forces her — or tries to force her — to take her place.
Not for the mere fact she kills, but also because of his attraction towards her, which was alluded to since ch.1.
He killed her lover, she kills his.
She kills his other “partner”, he kills her sister.
It’s a tit for tat until he lets her go.
She’s free to leave if she wants.
But she has lost so much. She does feel quiet inside, but leaving now feels like leaving unfinished business. So she gets back to finish him and his dad off.
The fact he complies with her request to take off his scarecrow mask was interesting.
“Now there’s only pain in you,” he says.
“There’s nothing in me. Everything has been taken away by you.”
A shadow of a smile appears and goes away.
“Now you’re all that’s left.”
I got the feeling she was talking to her trauma, not him.
When she leans on him, closes her eyes and touches him, she seems at peace for a few moments. Like she has accepted his existence in her life. He’s never leaving her mind. Ever.
The way she studied him, it was acceptance of the new her that he made, not acceptance of him.
That was why she was able to finish him off.
