Ed wonders, as he usually does when they leave their cot for a walk by the shore, why they don't do this more often.
The Sun is low as the afternoon gives way to a calm and quiet evening in their island, there is a cooling breeze kissing their lands as the water laps at their bare feet. Stede is talking animatedly, gesturing effusively with the hand that isn't holding Ed's own right now and Ed allows the sound of his voice to wash over him paired with the wind and the waves and the occasional seagull flying in lazy circles over them.
His knee starts protesting what must have been just half an hour after they have left the house, reminding him why they don't do this as of ten as he would like.
He doesn't say anything, but there must be some change in the way he is walking, or in the speed he is doing so, because it doesn't take Stede too long to slow down too, gently guiding Ed towards a group of flat, and thankfully dry, rocks next to some tide pools.
"Why don't we take a break, my darling?" Stede asks, even if he already knows the answer, allowing Ed to decide if he really need the rest before they make their way back home, " you know how much I enjoy exploring around the tide pools." And Ed could burst with how much he loves him.
"Sure yeah."
Stede doesn't say anything as Ed makes him way to the rocks, gingerly sitting down, focusing instead of getting his trousers and sleeves folded up to avoid getting them wet.
Ed stretches his leg, cursing the way it limits him sometimes, and avoiding thinking how it will continue to do so as he grew older, a thought he never had to worry about before, seeing as he could tell he was never going to make it this far.
He will live with it, he tells himself, he won't be alone to do so.
He turns his attention to Stede instead, as soon as he feels the pain and the pressure calming down a bit, and he is breathtaking, with his hair shining golden under the Sun, and the focused expression on his face as he looks down at the water, he wonders what new treasures Stede will take home with him to join their ever-growing collection of trinkets.
"Hey babe!" He calls out.
"Yes?" And Stede doesn't even look up, and Ed can't wait for Stede to tell him all about what he is seeing.
"I love you."
At that, Stede does look up, and the light of the Sun has nothing on his smile, and the lulling sound of the waves, so familiar to Ed has nothing on his voice as he calls to Ed, "I love you too."
