Trampling the Marigolds

Johanna hears them before she sees them (not that that’s surprising, given that her grandchildren sound like a thundering herd on the pavers) and wipes dirt from her palms before standing up straighter.

“Nana, Nana!”

She feigns surprise when they run around the corner, pressing her hand to her chest and offering a gasp.

“Oh my, who is that?” she calls, stepping over the barrier to the flower bed so her more-than-eager babies won’t trip over the brick or trample over the marigolds.

“Nana, s'us!” Izzy insists mid-run. “S'Izzy an Jon!”

Upon hearing his name, little Jon’s head pops out from behind his sister. “Hi Nana!”

Johanna grins, kneeling carefully, extending her arms for both children. Isabelle is first to crash into her, but she manages to stay upright to accept the hug Jonathan offers as well.

“Well hi, my babies. I’ve missed you. How are you?” She dots kisses to their heads, giving them the chance to bounce in her arms before she gets to her feet and attempts to haul them up.

“Careful, monsters,” Rick calls. “Breaking Nana in the first five minutes isn’t a good plan.”

Johanna laughs, shaking her head in her son-in-law’s direction. “They’re fine, Rick. Aren’t you guys?” she adds, dropping kisses on their noses.

“Ya!”

Rick concedes, joining them a minute later and dipping to kiss her cheek. “Hi, Johanna. Miss us?”

She chuckles. “So much. How’s Katie?”

Joy lights his eyes. “Ready to get the newest troublemaker into the world.”

Johanna squeezes the kids, swaying a little as they start talking over one another, telling her all about Mommy going to the hospital to have ‘their’ baby.

“Well, tell her not to worry about these two; we will be just fine.” She hefts the children higher on her hips.

Her son-in-law smiles, pressing a kiss to her cheek. “Thanks. I’ll call as soon as I can.”

Johanna nods, watching him kiss his children and dart around to the front of the house again with a spring in his step.

Sweet Treats

Cooking with her granddaughter is always fun but baking with Izzy is so much better. There’s a joy and a magic that comes from whipping up different sweet ingredients, using different cutters and creating different shapes.

It’s a delightful way to spend her afternoon while Katie and Rick are out taking advantage of the Black Friday sales. Izzy chatters happily from the moment she wakes up (save for the few minutes she needs to acclimate herself to being at Nana’s still instead of her own house), cheerful as she eats her breakfast and then eager and excited to try out a new recipe.

She doesn’t even fuss when Jo reminds her not to sample too much of their batter (which is a welcome change from the first time they’d baked together, when little miss hadn’t quite understood the reasoning). Of course, they both try a little; they have to make sure it tastes right, after all. It’s enough to hold Izzy over until the treats come out of the oven.

Once they do, though? All bets are off. The treats are still warm when Izzy insists on removing them from the pan, bouncing joyfully at their success at making pumpkin cookies shaped like leaves, pumpkins, and even acorns.

“What do you think, Izzy?” Johanna asks, giving one of their creations a sniff. She can smell the cinnamon still, which tells her they’ve done a good job, but there’s always the matter of taste.

Izzy grins, taking a big bite. “S'so nummy, Nana!”

“Oh, phew. Well, let’s put a plate together and go give one to Grandpa, too.”

Her sweet girl nods, content to chomp away at the rest of her cookie first.

I saw this on Tiktok and thought it needed to be passed on. Pololū Valley is sacred land currently at risk of being developed into yet another "scenic tourist attraction" for profit. Activists like @/melemaikalanimakalapua on Tiktok are fighting to have this petition seen by as many people as possible in order to prevent the senseless destruction of this land.
