Trivia: Just as in Dostoevsky's novel, the manga is set in St. Petersburg only days before the Russian Revolution. However, the end of the manga is vastly different from the novel.

Trivia: Tezuka modelled Sapphire after the Takarazuka Revue musical theatre's themes and aesthetics. The 宝塚歌劇団 is a Japanese all-female musical theatre troupe; regardless of the characters' genders, women portray males as well as females. Tezuka would see these stage plays as a child, his mother was friends with many of the performers.
