the cognitive dissonance from people who want the products of modern medicine but get weird about animal research. like im sorry but this is necessary for the survival of the society we currently live in. and the scientists who work on these things are not evil cackling psychopaths. anyone you talk to in animal research has incredibly complex feelings about their work and incredibly complex relationships to the animals in their care. there are regulations and oversight and penalties in place to make the work as humane as possible and scientists are overwhelmingly the ones enforcing and advocating for better care.
@velvetdemon I'm doing a full reply because I want to give this question the time and space it deserves, and I really do appreciate your curiosity about this.
The short answer: It is deeply unethical. There are nowhere near enough willing patients in the world to be able to do this, and it would be criminal to put them through this.
The long answer: The one side of the equation you're focusing on is: how much of a drug is too much, to the point where it will cause negative side effects or even death? And this is crucial to know. But it's not just a matter of finding out the lethal dosage of a heart cholesterol medication, you need to know that it can actually lower the cholesterol of any living thing. There is no way to know this without giving it first to...a living thing.
But beyond this, I need to emphasize: The goal of a drug trial is to effectively cure people who are already suffering from disease, who are living on limited time.
Drug trials don't just happen on any member of the public, they need to happen specifically on people affected by the disease you're trying to treat. There is at any time a very limited and very marginalized population of the world affected by early onset, familial Parkinson's disease. Because you cannot ethically induce disease in a human being, you are working with, speaking with, and helping patients and their families who are hopeful and desperate for a cure.
If you were to jump straight to human trials from petri dishes, not knowing absolutely anything about how the drug functions in a living, breathing animal body, it would look like this:
We didn't know that minute quantities of the drug interact lethally with x, y, z medication that people are commonly also taking. X number of patients have died as a result.
We didn't know that the drug is fatal to people with [common variant] in their genetics. X more patients have died.
We didn't know the drug exacerbates x, y, z chronic illnesses. X number of people have acquired permanent, lifelong disabilities.
We didn't know the best way to deliver the drug, so we tried multiple ways: the people who received it intravenously are now suffering from a painful, costly, and debilitating condition that did not happen with the ingested form.
I could go on, and on, and on.
The vast majority of these problems can be nearly or almost entirely averted by testing other animals first.
These are all people who possibly could have waited for the normal progression from animal testing to human testing and thus received better outcomes. Some people will pass away in the time it takes to get to that point, and that's heartbreaking, and we all wish science could be faster.
But the cost of expediting science could mean a life of profoundly greater suffering or an even shorter life than the one where no intervention happens at all. And at that point, you have completely exhausted your trust, your goodwill, and your patients' hope, after you've failed to do anything or even worsened the lives of people who are already deeply suffering.
hi, iām an animal research professional. making sure laboratory animals stay alive, healthy, and enriched has been my full-time job for several years now.
animal research is not the mad scientist wild west that PETA wants you to think it is. there are extremely strict federal laws in place to protect the well being of these animals. animal welfare organizations like AAALAC ensure that lab animals are treated with dignity & respect and are given enough specialized care & enrichment to be happy and content in captivity, just like AZA accreditation with zoos.
not a single animal from a zebrafish to a mouse to a dog to a macaque goes unaccounted for. if an animal gets moved to a new cage, paired for breeding, has a procedure performed on it, gives birth, gets sick or injured, dies, etc. it isĀ legally requiredĀ that this information is recorded and kept on file for the US federal government to access. failing to record & retain this information is very much punishable by US federal law.
let me tell you - if you abuse or kill an animal, even a mouse - you are almost certainly getting both fired & blacklisted from the industry. if you abuse or kill a more āadvancedā animal, such as a dog or monkey, you will likely face criminal charges. killing a monkey is as serious and disastrous as a nuclear meltdown. you are expected to reasonably explain every illness, injury, or death of an animal under your care. you must record all of this information. animals that are clearly suffering with low QOL are required to be euthanized according to AVMA guidelines.
research animals are highly expensive. yes, even the "lesser" animals like mice. the cheapest mice will run you a few hundred $ per individual, with some of the most expensive mice i've cared for being $25,000 per individual. in research we have the "three Rs" - reduction (reduce amount of necessary animals to a minimum), refinement (refine processes to ensure research is accurate and animals feel no pain or distress), and replacement (replace animals with non-living research models as they become available). i can assure you no proper research team is wasting animals (*do not* say "b-b-but elon musk--" his research team is actively being investigated for animal abuse by the government).
research methods that do not require live animals are currently being looked into & efforts spearheaded by - you guessed it - the animal research industry itself (notice how the animal rights people are strangely silent & unhelpful when it comes to this?) but current technology is rudimentary and does not compare to live animal models.
some research animal fun facts (US edition):
all species of animals are only allowed to have one single major surgery performed on them in their entire lifetime.
institutions with nonhuman primates must have a behavior program in place (run by knowledgeable primate specialists) to ensure that they are happy and receiving enough daily enrichment and social interaction.
institutions with dogs are required to have physical exercise programs in place. this means every individual dog gets a substantial amount of leashed AND free-roaming exercise daily, including playgroups with other dogs.
a majority of nonhuman primates get to retire to sanctuaries likeĀ peaceable primate sanctuary, and almost all dogs get retired and adopted out by organizations likeĀ homes for animal heroes. some institutions will also adopt out unneeded young rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, etc.
some strains of mice glow neon green (or orange or blue) under UV light. this is not harmful to them and is commonly seen in cancer research.
so yes, you can rest knowing that laboratory animals are treated with the utmost respect by their caretakers. and you can stop this awful, ignorant talk of human experimentation that will only end in the abuse of nonwhite people, LGBT people, disabled people, indigenous people, and so many others. please just take a look atĀ this wikipedia pageĀ if you think āethicalā human experimentation can exist.
The pioneering gynecology research of James Marion Sims was done on unwilling, unanesthetised Black slave women. So, like, in case you wanted to know what the alternative to animal study is.
Oh forgot to add I did see the prom question, Iām making a thing, but pretty busy at the moment
Came across your murder drones and it looks really fun, I like your take on Cyn as a Disassembly drone. Speaking of which what does she think of Thad and Lizzy?
Thatās a good question, havenāt really thought about it before.
Thad seems like someone that can hang out with anyone, theyād get along though Cyn doesnāt really care or understand sports so unless they can find something else to talk about their conversations tend to lean towards just shallow small talk. That being said I think Cyn definitely sees him as a friend and someone reliable.
I donāt think Cyn liked Lizzy at first, she seemed like a typical mean girl and she even sort of back stabbed V, even if she changed her mind right before Doll tried to killed V. I do think she later realises sheās a bit kinder then her outward faƧade appeared. I like the idea of Lizzy telling Cyn she needs a makeover and proceeds to go on a fashion spree and Cyn loves playing dress up so they end up having a good time together.
adulthood notes:
The Rodeo Rule: you only have to do it for the first time once.
The Rohan Rule: if you are at a social function full of new people and you want to be liked, find someone doing important work like setup or food prep and offer to help.
The Tutorial Mode Rule: to navigate an unfamiliar situation where you fear you will mess up an interaction, preface the interaction by mentioning that you've never done this before, and let them know if you have a specific concern or question.
The Rocket Science Rule: most new things you want to try seem very complicated but are simple when taken step by step.
The [X] Will Remember That Rule: if you need to make small talk with the same person on a regular basis, try to save one fact or current event in their life from a given conversation and bring it up next time you talk.
The Cool Binder Rule: by wearing clothes and accessories that are to your taste instead of trying to blend in, people will be more likely to compliment you and show interest in you as a person.

a follow up question from my last ask but what would V think of Cyn now that she knows that she wasn't the solver but her own person who is as much as a victim as she is?
Sorry this is late construction cut the wire for the internet to my apartment building. Now on mobile.
Yeah V feels like a huge asshole, up to that point V had been nasty to Cyn and finding out what Cyn has been saying for years is in fact true does not feel great. V doesnāt really feel like someone that will out right say sorry but she does change her behaviour, like how V takes the fall for Uziās killing spree in canon, sheāll help Cyn with her mobility and general just be a lot kinder, though still in her own V way. V canāt even be mad at Cyn for accepting the Solverās offer because when Tessa rescued V from the dump she never asked questions about what sheād have to do in return either, sheās just lucky that Tessa only wanted to be friends.
how will episode 5 play out in the DD Cyn AU?
Episode 5 would probably be about revealing how Cyn and the Solver are different people to the group rather than just showing what happened at the gala, weāve already seen that in canon no need to repeat that in this AU. I am stumped on what to do with Uzi becoming the DDs admin, because I feel like if that was all it took to keep the Solver away the Cabin fever scientists wouldnāt have had to make a patch. Maybe it can simply be blocking the Solverās ability to access them quickly and far away? That could be why in episode 7 when the Solver tried to take over N and got blocked by Uzi being his admin it drags N away to manually override him, before Nori saves him. Also I forgot if I mentioned this in the original post but current disassembly drone Cynās body is not her own, like her, and Tessaās, bodies are still being used by the Solver and Cyn is actually remotely controlling the new body, either itās using a blank core or maybe itās actually just filled with flesh, need to see which is cooler, but you can see how that might make the admin thing complicated.
Obviously the ending would also need to change as the goober gang, as I like to call them, will know for sure that the spacesuit isnāt Tessa and probably wouldnāt be fooled if it pretended to be a random human. Doll can still team up with J and the Solver like she did in canon.
A note from our askbox: if you ordered items from the store, be sure to check thoroughly in your e-mail inbox (spam, purchases tab, etc.) for a confirmation or update. It will have all the details of your order. If there are any concerns, you can look into their store's "Contact Us" page.
One more thing, please don't share your personal information with us!
Internet safety is gone I swear. Remember before ever giving any website your info check the url make sure it's the official website and for the love of god if the page has text right above the button you click that says their not official don't give them your info.
I think the funniest complaint Iāve seen of the Glitch merch is that someone hasnāt gotten there merch yet and when they share which item it is itās a preorder. Like do you know what preorder means? Itās not like Glitch hides it either itās right underneath the name of the item.
Also just the idea that everything has to be same day delivery is wild to me, itās not like merch is a time sensitive purchase. When itās ready to ship it takes like a week or so, and a good portion of that is just literal time for the boat from China to get to Europe
heard someone say "who even owns a rolling pin anymore" and my brain froze trying to process it. what does that mean. are u implying rolling pins are outdated technology? did we come up with a shiny new 21st century method of flattening dough of which i remain uninformed? is there now an app on the app store people are using instead??? im losing my mind "who even owns a rolling pin" people who BAKE
I have a rolling pin but I use it with clay

Hiii!!!
do N, Uzi, and V miss Tessa?
I have no idea if this is for an AU or canon so Iāll just start with canon and talk about the differences in my AUs
I think all of the alphabet gang misses Tessa in some way, at least when they have the memories of her. Tessa rescued them from the dump and in turn they gave her companionship, which from the small bit of info we have on her seemed in short supply. Uzi never knew Tessa so she canāt really miss her like the others but sheās there to lend an ear to both N and V if they want to talk about it. There is also the theory that Tessa is assimilated into the solver which Uzi now has control over, so they might not have to miss her.
Disassembly Drone Cyn is the same as cannon but with the added spice that when the others see Cyn Talking to Tessa and mentions her name it⦠does not go over well. J is terrified and will never confront Cyn about it, but it does build resentment towards Cyn. V gets explosive and Tells Cyn to cut the crap. N doesnāt remember Tessa so his reaction is the mildest of them all, the name sounds familiar but it must just be that itās the name of Cynās imaginary friend, or hallucination, can robots even hallucinate? N doesnāt know but heāll just have to keep an eye out for his little sis.
For Solver Tessa AU, Tessa isnāt dead, but the alphabet gang doesnāt know that. After the core collapse and the arrival of the disassembly drones on Copper 9 Tessa did try to contact her friends again but similar to the DD Cyn AU, it does not go well. V and J donāt believe her when she says sheās alive and not the Solver, humans canāt live on Copper 9, at least not without a space suit and also Tessaās still a teenager, Tessa didnāt grow physically, think vampire or zombie, they might have been reset a few times but they know itās been years since the gala, Tessa should be a grown ass woman, how dumb must the Solver think J and V are to believe itās obvious manipulation tricks? Tessa did try multiple times to convince them but she could never get through to them, even caused a few resets with how hard she tried. N is weird as he crashes whenever he sees Tessa. He feels like heās missing someone he just doesnāt know who and how, he has nightmares about needing to save someone but when he wakes up the dream disappears from his mind.
Oh and Uzi misses Tessa whenever she goes out for scavenger hunts, Tessaās kind of Uziās only friend, not that sheāll admit that. Luckily Tessaās never gone too long, the bunker is the only place with working heaters, Tessa doesnāt like getting frost bite so sheāll come back soon as possible.
How do interactions with Ghost Tessa and DD-Cyn play out? Tessa(&everyone else) really need to understand that Cyn and the absolute solver are not one of the same, the poor robo girl never asked to be a puppet for some multiverse level entity
First I love getting all these asks, thanks so much for being interested in my yapping.
Tessa is actually one of the few people that know that Cyn and the Solver are actually different people, she saw them arguing and even has been a victim of the Solver using her own identity to trick others. Tessaās annoyance towards Cyn is more to do with her letting the Solver in, rather than her believing she is the solver, she knows itās partly petty but it is very hard to reconcile the idea that someoneās actions even if they were unintentional ended up resulting in her death, the death of her parents and most of the human race.
They mostly just talk about random stuff, like how many human skulls theyāve seen that day or making up random backstories to the corpses, human or drone, laying around. Thereās frankly not a lot they can talk about so they mostly try and entertain themselves. There are times Cyn get so caught up with talking to Tessa that she forgets the others canāt see or hear her so she ends up looking like sheās hallucinating.
For what Tessa does when she is in control also isnāt to insane, she can only take control for an hour or so, but Tessa is more mobile then Cyn, the ballet classes she was forced to take came in useful for walking on the peg legs. Tessa has actually hunted for Cyn too a few times, sheās a morbid little goober and being turned into a killing machine while terrifying is kind of āwickedā, at least according to Tessa.ļæ¼
Forgot to share my second place piece I made for the Glitch Inn's Gameoverse art contest. Getting the composition for this piece was a nightmare but I like how it turned out .
So currently trying to find anyone that bought the set pack and got the super rare Sparky, current count is 0 out of 50 set packs, which resulted in me looking at parts of the fandom on other websites and holy shit I hate most of the other fans on other websites. So much AI use like using it for "Fanart" or talking about how their Character AI bot did this or that, as well as like new discourse or bad takes I could never even have dreamed of. I think I'll just stick to Tumblr and occasionally braving twitter to look at art work.
Iāve had the pleasure of working on the entirety of Season 1 of Murder Drones, from the first episode in 2021, to the final episode in 2024.
More official character renders from Alicia Howard.
Small note these are great at showing how Alice's Eyelets and lace are unique to her future self and not what the cabin fever subjects wore.

What is Uzi and Cyn's relationship like?
I assume you mean for the Disassembly drone Cyn, if you meant canon just sent me an other ask, I love yapping about Murder Drones.
Cyn liked Uzi pretty fast as she was nice to N, which he desperately needed, Cyn was the only one nice to him up to that point (V might love N but she sure as hell wasnāt nice to him at the start of the series). When Uzi started showing signs of having the solver it did worry Cyn a bit but itās not like she was unaware of the cabin fever subjects. Cyn actually tried to help Uzi because she knew right away the problem, she wasnāt about to let Uzi deal with the side effects alone like she had to.
From Uziās perspective Cyn is Nās very weird little sister, she clearly knows more then she lets on but at the very least is more open about it then V. More along the lines of āyes this solver stuff is bad news but I canāt tell you more as it might be listening.ā Also Cyn isnāt constantly threatening Uzi and can be expected to be around her and not have to worry about being eaten so thatās a big plus.
Follow up to the headcanon that without the blue AI its way more effort for Caine to manage the circus so you might find him conked out in the weirdest places and positions
I misread Jax saying comfortable with climbable, I blame my dyslexia, and thought Jax just found out the tubes were climbable and he was gonna do some parkour tricks.
If I was in the circus I'd be doing dumb shit like that
