If you thought Sarah Kline had been able to focus the remainder of the day, you would be WRONG. There was no way she’d be able to do her job in any proper way. Not when the cutest boy in town had asked her if he could buy her a milkshake after work. That counted as a DATE, right? Gosh, how excited she was. Had she been able to make a stop at home, she’d dress up into something more pretty. LESS FORMAL. But she had already agreed on him picking her up after work and she was not gonna ruin the opportunity by suggesting anything otherwise. She had tried different hairstyles, though and sighed in frustration when someone called and she had to pause to pick up the phone. Eventually, she settled on ditching the bun and letting her curls hang loose.
She hurried to get her coat when her shift was over. Heels click-clacked happily against the floor as she skipped her way towards the exit. The brunette quickly composed herself, however, when her eyes caught his, forcing herself to be more CASUAL and cool. But she couldn’t completely help the skip in her step and once she reached him, she decided she must’ve looked a bit FOOLISH in her giddiness.
“I hope you didn’t have to wait for too long.” she smiled. Should she give him a HUG? Would that be weird? She had to decide now otherwise it would be weird. Doe browns looked up at him to catch his gaze and she realized how TALL he was. Would tip-toeing even be enough to wrap her arms around his shoulders? A chuckle got stuck in her throat and the hue of a blush crept upon her cheeks. “—I was just considering giving you a hug but I really have to climb up there to achieve that, huh?” she admitted before even realizing it, followed by a sweet laugh.

Evan, too, was giddy and nervous, having barely managed to finish his errands that afternoon. When he suggested that he and Sarah have a milkshake together, little did he know how nervous that would make him, and how LONG it had been since he’d been on a first date. DATE ? Gosh, was he assuming a lot here, a hopeless romantic that merely asking a beautiful girl out for a milkshake was implication enough ? Perhaps, but if he played it right, maybe he could ask her again, more formally, more — directly.
That, however, required confidence, and not to imply Evan wasn’t a confident man, but around Sarah, he seemed to go a little numb.
‘ I wasn’t waiting long, no, ‘ he smiled, deceptively so, because he had shown up early to get the ‘ arrival ‘ jitters out of him, that anticipatory anxiety that spiked when he knew something was about to START. ‘ We’ll get you a step stool,’ he teased back at her, leaning in because he, too, had been wondering if a hug was appropriate. His arms found her waist and a soft, gentle tug meant they were hugging now, Sarah up on her tip toes by the strength of him holding her.
Was it common to feel butterflies this early on ?
‘ Thanks for wanting to spend your evening with me. Shall we ? ‘ he asked then, pulling back, letting his heart rate slow down, gesturing now towards his car.
