Fictional major city in real country: standard fair, but it's usually clearly based on a real city
Fictional suburb of real major city in real country: strange but I can see the application
Real major city in fictional country: Chicago can be anywhere you dream of
Among the many crimes against good writing and the audience committed in the back half of SGA, perhaps one of the worst for me personally was arranging things such that I was actually unhappy to see Sam.
In the better version of S4 there’s a massive John-Sam conflict centered on the fact that John does not actually know how to deal with a CO just as committed to recklessly leading from the front and disobeying orders as he is.

Sam: I’m sorry John, but I can’t authorize you going to rescue Elizabeth from the replicators
John: :(
[the next morning]
John: Colonel, with all due respect, what are you doing to my jumper
Sam: [duel wielding welding torches] Oh this? This is the Elizabeth rescueatron 3000. It lets the jumper project small bubbles of its cloak to other nearby locations so the replicators won’t even know we’re there!
John: you told me I couldn’t go last night
Sam: We were due to send a databurst to the SGC last night and the Daedalus hadn’t left yet. Now we have a whole week to do whatever we want before we have to tell them! If my time with SG1 taught me anything, it’s that it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission. Now, what do you think about Jenifer doing experimental brain surgery on me so I can fly the jumper? I’ve been developing an implant that mimics the ATA. It does need a sample from an ATA-positive pilot’s motor cortex though. You don’t mind, do you?

Really good work from Waid here to define Dick’s motivations as a crime fighter—loss has its part it in, but it generated a very strong protective instinct—and not vengeance, which can be a mischaracterization of him. And the “I made a mistake taking you in” aside, some solid parenting from Bruce.

the thing w there being potatoes in lord of the things is that there ARE actually at least 2 built in explanations for it:
1: they don't have potatoes; the references to potatoes in the Shire were added by Tolkien-the-translator as part of a wider localisation. when Sam mentions potatoes he's actually talking about some other vegetable
2: given that Middle Earth was historically ruled over by the Numenoreans who come from a lost kingdom on the other side of the western ocean, it could be that Numenor was in or had contact with ancient America and brought potatoes back with them
2 is kind of a stretch tho interesting to contemplate; 1 however on some level i think is the correct answer. the Shire's resemblance to England is 100% canonically a localisation thing. The Shire is England bcos it's the main characters' home and the intended audience of the book was English people.
the decision to incorporate post-colombian exchange plants like potatoes and tobacco isn't innocuous but it was a purposeful decision with reasoning behind it beyond 'they have potatoes because I said so'.
lord of the rings adaptation where Sam is talking about how much he loves potatoes while holding a vegetable that is visibly not a potato, a la pokemon characters talking about jelly donuts while eating rice balls

I think if you showed baru cormorant excel spreadsheets she would feel wonder at its arithmetic capabilities and profound pleasure at her command of such a quick witted tool but after a few hours sunk into playing with it the cold fist of dread that this was a masquerade tool - provided her to poison her figures? - would close in her chest and she’d queasily redo all the sums by hand just to double check and finding nothing would wonder if it wasn’t an exercise to steadily sow her faith in the technology and make her complacent in its whisperings so that one errant sum arced from the heart of the empire like an arrow could unravel the intestines of her lifelong work and she would come to the troubled conclusion that she could never trust their solutions meanwhile the apparitor is like you aren’t using Microsoft excel? and baru is like (lie) I found its results finicky, I trust my own hand better & apparitor’s like really now? You had trouble with it? Odd… And their brow furrows and the white hot knife of triumph like a darting fish flashes through baru’s mind like I’ve caught them guilty now! meanwhile exceedingly hot women are begging to have sex with her and she’s like don’t bother me right now I need to think on how to outsmart Microsoft excel
