The FCC will host a public forum on improving the co-existence of cellular and other commercial wireless licensees and public-safety licensees in the 800 MHz band. The forum will be held Nov. 6 at FCC headquarters.

In its Cellular Reform Second Report and Order adopted March 23, 2017, the Commission revised the Cellular Service power and related technical rules to provide much more flexibility in deployment of advanced broadband services and promote spectral efficiency, while taking steps to protect public safety and other systems in the 800 MHz band from potential increased interference.  Recognizing that stakeholder-led efforts on the part of Cellular licensees, public safety entities, and public safety equipment manufacturers are crucial to resolving lingering concerns about unacceptable interference to public safety mobile and portable radios, the Commission directed the Bureaus to convene a forum to foster the conversation and further good-faith efforts among representatives of these stakeholders. The forum on November 6th will include the perspectives of all three groups and various other interested parties in exploring the existing 800 MHz interference environment, realistic anticipated changes in that environment, and practical options for addressing both existing and anticipated interference problems without hindering technological advances in the Cellular Service. A detailed agenda will be released prior to the forum

Transition to 6.25 kilohertz is still in the FCC commission’s future plans. When and how the transition will happen is anyone’s guess. The most recent example is that FCC denied a request for waiver filed by the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA). IMSA requested the certification deadline of VHF and UHF (150.80 – 162.0125, 173.20 – 173.40 and 421 – 512 MHz) LMR equipment that is not capable of operating on 6.25-kilohertz channels be extended until at least January 2020.

FCC commission announced that it would no longer certify equipment that could not operate on 6.25-kilohertz channels on Jan. 1, 2005, this deadline was later pushed back several times until it finally took effect Jan. 1, 2015. Whether or not the device has 6.25-kilohertz capability, equipment certified prior to the deadline may still be sold. But, new equipment must include the capability to operate in 6.25-kilohertz mode.

As analog technology generally does not meet the 6.25-kilohertz requirement, the commission’s certification deadline effectively required new radios to be digital. IMSA believed this to be an undue burden on public-safety users. IMSA pointed out that the commission recently eliminated the 6.25-kilohertz capability requirement for 700 MHz band public-safety equipment. If the requirement no longer made sense at 700 MHz, why continue to apply it to the bands below 512 MHz?

On June 30, the commission ultimately rejected IMSA’s arguments and issued an order denying its request for waiver. The commission stated that some comments in the proceeding claimed market competition has kept the price of 6.25-kilohertz-capable equipment comparable to that of similar equipment without 6.25-kilohertz capability.

Critical Communications World, (CCW), scheduled 16 – 18 May in Hong Kong, is on track to attract more than 3,000 critical communications professionals with 90 percent of the registrations coming from outside Hong Kong, the organizer said. It is not just an Asian event, it is a global event.

Mission-critical communications suppliers took advantage of Critical Communications World (CCW) in Hong Kong last week to announce new products aimed at mission-critical broadband networks around the world.

Hytera Communications announced the LTE-PMC convergence platform of products targeting the professional mobile radio (PMR) evolution to 4G and 5G technologies.

The company also announced a new vision for its command-and-control products with narrowband trunking and multimedia command and control. Hytera executives said they will provide the application programming interface (API) to its partners to ensure a rich environment for third-party developers.

Airbus Defence and Space also announced a suite of products targeting hybrid TETRA and LTE networks.

Sepura announced the SC21 radio, available in July or August, which is a lower-end product to the SC20 but with robust data capabilities. Target users include home health workers, covert users and those who needed a smaller radio.

Motorola Solutions released the Dimetra X Core, a TETRA system that allows users to get the most out of existing Dimetra TETRA networks while preparing for mobile broadband capabilities. The system features a software-defined core to reduce system operating costs and enhanced cybersecurity features and is built for long-term performance for the next 15 years or more. The Dimetra Express is a single-site TETRA system in one box that can be deployed in 15 minutes.

PMRExpo took place for the sixteenth time from 22 to 24 November 2016 in Cologne. What is FRID

Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) is the use of radio waves to read and capture information stored on a tag attached to an object.  A RFID system is made up of two parts: a tag or label and a reader.

How does a RFID system work?

RFID tags or labels are embedded with a transmitter and a receiver. The RFID component on the tags have two parts: a microchip that stores and processes information, and an antenna to receive and transmit a signal. The tag contains the specific serial number for one specific object.

To read the information encoded on a tag, a two-way radio transmitter-receiver emits a signal to the tag using an antenna. The tag responds with the information written in its memory bank. The radio will then transmit the read results to an RFID computer program.

There are two types of RFID tags: passive and battery powered.  A passive RFID tag will use the radio wave energy to relay its stored information back to the RFID computer program.  A battery powered RFID tag is embedded with a small battery that powers the relay of information.

By deployed RFID readers on two way radios, the control center is automatically tracking workers. It knows which workers on duty on what GPS location and time, and can send that information back to computer program over the MOTOTRBO radio.

GPS tracking devices for handheld two-way radios are a relatively inexpensive way to track the course of users in near real time. The system’s GPS capabilities can also be used to enhance workers’ routing with team management and security applications.

Which band communication frequency do you need?

Depends on transmit and receive frequency it divide into GMRS (general mobile radio service) that are supported by business radios and FRS (family radio service) that are supported by the consumer radios.

For GMRS business radios, each person using the radios would need an individual GMRS license ($80 each). For FRS consumer radios using don’t need to purchase for license, but the transmit power must be less than a half watt. As such low transmit power the radio signal can only reach for a half mile of outdoor range. As has adequate frequencies ranges and lesser users, customers don’t need to worry about others’ communication signal interference.
