Is our relentless quest for economic growth killing the planet? Climate scientists have seen the data – and they are coming to some incendiary conclusions.
A fantastic article! (thanks Angus)
Tony Abbott announced his new ministry and it’s missing just a few things.
For those followers who aren’t Australian, this mother fucker is running our country now. I saw a post the other day that explained it perfectly; “Our Romney won” :(
Queensland Premier Campbell Newman says he is looking forward to a better relationship with the Federal Government under Tony Abbott. Mr Newman says gaining environmental approval for development projects in Queensland is his top priority with the new Federal Government.
In other words, complete annihilation of the natural environment for his own interests... I hope you've all seen the Great Barrier Reef while it still exists.
Today is the first day of the Liberal party leadership in Australia under Tony Abbott, and I'm scared as hell. For those of you not in Australia, in brief the Liberal party of Australia is a conservative, right-wing major party, much like the Republicans in the U.S. They're homophobic, misogynistic, racist and seem intent on ecocide.
So just a heads up, I will likely be posting quite a bit about this government and their crappy politics over at least the next few years, starting now. It may not always be about the environment, but it's my belief that the oppression of other groups stems from the same broken system and beliefs as the destruction of the environment.
However dismal the political climate seems in Australia at the moment, the fight must continue. I will be watching every move this government makes, ready to educate, organise and protest every crime they dream up against the environment.
I hope that you will all be right there with me, even just in spirit.

China’s Pollution Worsens with 220,000 lb of Dead Fish Authorities have scooped up around 100,000 kilograms (220,000 pounds) of dead fish they say were poisoned by ammonia from a chemical plant, environmental officials and state media announced today. It’s a reminder of the pollution plaguing the country. The Hubei province environmental protection department, notified of the piles of dead fish in central China’s Fuhe River on Monday, pointed the finger at local company Hubei Shuanghuan Science and Technology Stock Co. Officials said sampling of its drain outlet showed that ammonia density far exceeded the national standard. The company said it wasn’t going to immediately comment. 2013 Australian Elections
Tony Abbott: What the housewives of australia need to understand - as they do the ironing - is that if they get it done commercially, it's going to go up in price
Tony Abbott: I think it would be folly to expect that women will ever dominate or even approach equal representation in a large number of areas simply because their aptitudes, abilities and interests are different for physiological reasons
Tony Abbott: Jesus didn't say yes to everyone, jesus knew there was a place for everything and it's not necessarily everyone's (asylum seekers and refugees) place to come to Australia
Tony Abbott: Same sex marriage? i'm not someone who wants to see radical change based on the fashion of the moment
Tony Abbott: I won't be rushing out to get my daughters vaccinated against cervical cancer
Tony Abbott: If we're honest, most of us would accept that a bad boss is a little bit like a bad father or a bad husband: not withstanding his or her faults you'll find that he tends to do more good than harm. He might be a bad boss, but at least he's employing someone while he is in fact a boss
Tony Abbott: Abortion is the easy way out. It's hardly surprising that people should choose the most convenient exist from awkward situations
Tony Abbott: There may not be a great job for indigenous people, but whatever it is they just have to do it - and if it's picking up rubbish around the community, it just has to be done
Australians: Let's make him prime minister

Senate in Argentina Passes Law To Make Banco Namuncurá (Burdwood) Country’s First Oceanic Marine Protected Area
After a people powered campaign for Earth Hour 2013, Argentina’s Senate has unanimously approved the creation of “Banco Namuncurá (Burdwood)”, a 3.4 million hectare Marine Protected Area (MPA) that will more than triple the proportion of the Argentine seas under protection.
The campaign to make Banco Namuncurá (Burdwood) the biggest MPA in the country was a part of Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina’s Earth Hour campaign for 2013, which mobilised thousands of participants to help champion the passing of the then pending Senate bill.
The MPA was already approved by the Chamber of Deputies in late 2012.
"Fundacion Vida Silvestre (WWF Associate in Argentina), along with Patagonia Natural, Wildlife Conservation Society and other organizations, were instrumental in getting this law passed by providing technical information on the area’s importance to legislators," said Diego Moreno, CEO of Vida Silvestre. “This outcome is testament to their hard work and the support of thousands of Argentinians who gave their voice to protect the seas.”
Andy Ridley, CEO and Co-Founder of Earth Hour added, “The voice of people to ensure a sustainable future for our planet has proven an important element to delivering this 3.4 million hectare MPA. The decision today is a brilliant outcome for Argentina, and sets an example for other communities around the world to use their voice for change.”
Before the law was passed, only 1% of the coastal marine area of Argentina was protected. The creation of this new MPA increases the protection of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone to more than 4%.
Its approval is the first step in fulfilling international commitments made by the Argentine Government, which signed the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992.
Banco Namuncurá (Burdwood) is an area of high biodiversity, located in a submarine plateau south of the Patagonian Sea, 150 km from Isla de los Estados (Staten Island).
Starfish, sea sponges and cold-waters corals are among the species particularly vulnerable to environmental changes in Banco Namuncurá (Burdwood’s) waters, which also provide feeding areas for albatrosses, petrels, penguins, sea lions and elephant seals seeking food. Whales and orcas are also found in the waters.
Fundacion Vida Silvestre Argentina works to support the creation of new marine and coastal protected areas, and identify areas valuable for conservation. Their Earth Hour 2013 campaign encouraged the participation of all pillars of society - from individuals, to governments, organisations and businesses - to improve the implementation of existing and future marine protected areas across the country.
Marine and Coastal Protected Areas are areas that have significant natural and cultural value and are guarded by law. They are tools for conservation and management of ocean biodiversity.

Clearly there is a growing recognition on the left that capitalism’s degradation of nature is in imminent danger of causing civilizational collapse. However, given the tragic loss of ecological thinking suffered by Marxism for much of the 20th century, and not only in the cancerous form of Stalinism, but with Trotskyism and Cliffism too, this ‘greening’ of the left is bound to be highly contradictory.
Undoubtedly, there are many comrades on the left, who, like us, have rediscovered the extraordinarily rich heritage of Karl Marx and Fredrick Engels. As shown by writers such as John Bellamy Foster (Marx’s Ecology 2000) and Paul Burckett (Marx and Nature 1999) the Marx-Engels team took a keen interest in the science of their day and developed profound insights into environmental problems. In Capital Marx famously urged the future communist society to take care of the earth like “boni patres familias” (good heads of the household) and “hand it down to succeeding generations” in an “improved condition”.
On the other hand, there remains a strong suspicion that many leftwing sects are simply jumping onto another bandwagon in a desperate attempt to gain recruits. This involves a crude adaptation to green ideology, which in the last analysis reflects the concerns, methods and limitations of petty bourgeois radicalism.
The working class presents the only viable alternative to the destructive reproduction of capital. First as a countervailing force within capitalism: its own logic pulls against that of capital. The political economy of the working class brings with it not only higher wages and shorter hours. It is responsible for health services, social security systems, pensions, universal primary and secondary education … and measures that protect the environment. Wealth, for the working class, is not merely about the accumulation and consumption of an ever greater range of commodities. Besides being of capitalism, the working class is uniquely opposed to capitalism. The political economy of the working class more than challenges capital. As we argue, it points beyond - to the total reorganisation of society and, with that, the ending of humanity’s strained, brutalised and crisis-ridden relationship with nature.
Socialism and communism do not raise the workers to the position where they own the planet. Mimicking the delusions associated with capitalism - as witnessed under bureaucratic socialism in the Soviet Union - brings constant disappointment, ecological degradation and the certain revenge of nature. Humanity can only be the custodian.
Marx was amongst the first to theorise human dependence on nature and the fact that humanity and nature co-evolves. He warned, however, that a metabolic “rift” had occurred which threatened the nature-imposed conditions of human existence. Capitalism crowds vast numbers into polluted, soulless, crime-ridden concrete jungles. Simultaneously, the ever bigger farms of capitalist agriculture denude nature with mono-crops, the ripping up of hedgerows and, as highlighted by Rachel Carson back in the early 1960s, the chemical death meted out to “birds, mammals, fishes, and indeed practically every form of wildlife”.
The Marx-Engels team wanted to re-establish an intimate connection between town and country, agriculture and industry, and rationally redistribute the population. Doubtless, this programme has little practical relevance to capitalist society, which, because of its short-termism and manic fixation on generating profits, is incapable of carrying through such far-reaching measures. But under conditions of socialism and communism such ideas will surely be put into practice.
Warm temperature trends continue near Earth’s surface: Four major independent datasets show 2012 was among the 10 warmest years on record, ranking either 8th or 9th, depending upon the dataset used. The United States and Argentina had their warmest year on record.

Farm kills millions of bees with illegal pesticide spraying, gets slap on wrist
A huge Florida citrus farm is being fined by state officials for poisoning millions of honeybees to death — but it’s not being fined very much. Ben Hill Griffin Inc., one of the state’s largest growers and a supplier to Florida’s Natural orange juice, is accused of illegally spraying pesticides (i.e., not following the directions on the labels) in ways that led to the deaths of bees kept by nearby beekeepers. One apiarist told officials that the farm used crop-dusters to douse its groves at least a dozen times — presumably to control Asian citrus psyllid, which spreads the devastating citrus greening disease. He estimated his losses at $240,000 worth of bees and reduced honey production. Another beekeeper says he is down $150,000.
So how much is the Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Department fining the company? A paltry $1,500.
^This is really disheartening...there should be much stronger penalties for using these chemicals.
